thanks for the info, I assumed they would have a contact, being the resourceful bunch that they are :) Yes, hate to think of what the shipping would be, I'm thinking almost as much as the FRP shell itself? I've also seen some of the posts around here from people who are looking into having them fabricated locally, maybe lusting is a better word for it as I haven't seen any solid confirmation that the plan will go through, but it would be really interesting in terms of the potential ability to custom fabricate the shell to the standard hoops, sticks and ROPS etc.

The main reason I'd like one is for security, as I'm finding that more often than not, I'm driving the rentie as my daily commute. In terms of camping/touring during the hot Australian months, and lacking some decent fan assisted ventilation, I think it would be a good thermal alarm clock :D Nice and sweaty in the morn!!

Window re-rubber? kits to stop the rattles they will have
Stereo for music?
Headlight upgrade, standard candles to HID or such? Spotlights?
The tyres are tubed
Some kind of sealant for the probably old canvas? Mine was $60 for 4l (dynaproof) and 2L does one roof coating..
Set aside some time to pull the dash apart and replace the probably broken dash plastics.. as Ive done 8000 km on mine so far and the dash has driven me crazy for at least 6000km of that by being lose/broken mount tabs

Yes all new doors seals and window seals a must. The kids will have there Ipods for music. I will install a radio that is compatible. Thanks for the headlight reminder. I would have remembered the first night out. Im a big fan of good lights. The dash is now on my list. Thanks.

How does the canvas look after a going over with the dynaproof:confused:

Well its been 2 years. We are hoping to get out there this year. 2018 at the latest. I changed jobs 2 years ago and just returned from Alaska. Actually the old company I retired from was fired after I left. The Company who hired them called me and offered me my old job but up in Alaska as they were running into problems. I finished that and I am now working in the Lower 48 servicing our seismic stations here. My wife and I are both busy but really need a real vacation soon. I am still looking at the Perentie as it is a great platform. We also decided to cross the Simpson Desert. Not sure which track yet but leaning towards the French Track. Open to suggestions. We will definitely purchase two Perentie 110s 4x4s. I still like the Surveillance models. The wife likes the standard 110 4x4.

After reading all of the suggestions to date I have changed a few items on my original list.

New List:
1. After picking up both Land Rovers I will have KLR fit them with Power Steering.
2. KLR to install door locks.
3. inspect, repack/replace axle bearings.
4. Front and rear axles will get Ashcroft Air Lockers.
5. Install Hi Tuff and or Ashcroft axles, stub axles, cvs, U joints and flanges ect.
6. All new suspension bushings.
7. Koni Raid Shocks (unless something better comes up).
8. NEW Wolf Military steel wheels with Staun internal bead locks (tubeless tires)
9. All 6 tires balanced (2 spare tires per rig).
10. All new brakes, brake hoses and brake cylinders ect..
11. Diff protectors and skid plates AS NEEDED if needed.
12. All fluids to be changed.
13. All filters to be changed.
14. All new belts and hoses (one complete extra set as spares per rig).
15. All suspension nuts to be re torqued and locktite applied.
16. NUGGET's Diff breather.
17. Install larger fuel tanks (200 liters plus combined).
18. Install 3 to 4, 67 liter water tanks per vehicle. Secured to rear floor and plumbed for easy fill and dispensing (electric pump).
19. Hot water shower unit.
20. Install hard top (cab).
21. Tires will be 255/85R16 Toyo MTs
22. Rhino Line rear bed area.
23. Dynamat cab floor, walls and ceiling.
24. Boom Mat Floor.
25. Install stock rubber floor covering.
26. Custom canvas work for seat covers, tire covers and other items. Same material as the Canvas top. I love that Camo Pattern!
27. Install Air Compressor and tank. Sealed for water crossings.
28. Each rig will be equipped with HF 150 Watt Transceivers. http://www.vks737.on.net/ (Thanks to 87COUNTY)
29. 2 solar panels mounted on roof. These charge two Oddessey Batteries completely separate from vehicle electrical system. These power non vehicle related accessories.
30. All batteries changed to Oddessey Batteries.
31. Install Freeze Fridges (largest possible). 1 per vehicle.
32. Synthetic Rope installed in place of wire rope.
33. Sat Phone per vehicle.
34. SPOT tracker per vehicle.
35. GPS per vehicle.
36. Engine mechanical fan to be removed and replaced with electrical fans (an off switch used for water crossings). Open to suggestions on this.
37. Nugget Light Guards.
38. Rock Sliders.
39. Water crossing apron (made from same material as canvas top).
40. KLR rear disc brake conversion.
41. KLR Turbo upgrade.
42. KLR ignition key conversion
43. ARB or comparable Snorkel
44. HD Flanges will have all of the flange bolts installed with the proper Locktite. (This brings up a great point. All typical loosening fasteners should get at least a dab of #1 locktite. This is designed to be able to be broken with a wrench but won't allow vibration to loosen them up.)








As stated buy some members here this is a lot of water and fuel. This of course is A LOT of extra weight. I would fill these to reasonable levels for the terrain we will encounter. I do like the capability to carry these at full levels but suspect I won't have to do that very often.

Thanks for this interesting thread outback - I hope you are able to follow through and undertake the trip you have in mind - maybe we'll meet.

Just a couple of points that do not seem to have been covered in depth - if you prepare well and can carry less you will find, as a general "rule of thumb", that mechanical issues will be reduced.

Also, you have mentioned the surveillance model (RFSV) - these do have useful extras but you may not be aware that they are geared lower in the transfer case which reduces comfortable cruise speed somewhat. They are also more firmly sprung (double springs on the rear) which may have some benefits but comfort isn't one of them. Any of this can be changed back to standard.

I believe that the RFSVs may be only road registerable 4X4 Perenties with disc brakes on the rear and a second fuel tank.

The RFSVs also come with truck style split rims but these can be obviously be replaced with standard LR road and/or tubeless tyre rims if required.

"Ham" radio is mainly used in Australia by radio enthusiasts and not so much by travellers. However there are 24hr HF networks that you can subscribe to which have Australia-wide radio coverage with phone connectivity. The 100-150watt transceivers are readily available new and second hand with appropriate frequencies installed. http://www.vks737.on.net/

HF radio can be quite useful if you end up going to a remote area. I wouldn't classify Cape York as remote unless you really got some distance away from the beaten track.

CB (UHF) radios can be handy for short range comms, and are relatively cheap.

As for camping on the beach, as Bearman post above, be careful.

Thank you for pointing the RSFV issue. The gearing factor may just have me in a standard Perentie 110.

A point someone made about a No5 Trailer has me thinking.

1. How difficult would the Fraiser Island be while pulling a Military style trailer?
2. How difficult would the Cape York track be while pulling a Military style trailer?
3. How difficult would it be to transverse the sand dunes in the Simpson Desert while pulling a Military style trailer.

The trailer would have a roof top style tent and a pull out cooking set up.

A standard No5 trailer does not have a tailgate and the drawbar is quite short - of course all this can be changed.

As for towing in sand, this will depend partly on tyre pressures but mostly with overall weight assuming good mechanical condition - again, that brings up that old rule about travelling light :)

The No5 trailers are about 350kg empty, I have regularly towed a homemade 200kg steel trailer which would be less than 400kg loaded with a folding tent on top over most sand types and haven't had a problem but I am a bit of a minimalist :D .
