Hi Cummo, not sure how you are going with this, but according to the manuals available from AFM (in the medium repair manual page 101,102)

it says this:

Ensure that the steering wheel and the front wheels are in the straight ahead position, and that the
match marks on the top universal joint and the steering column align. Install the collapsible shaft with
the long length towards the steering box. Fit the pinch bolts with new locknuts and torque them to
20 to 25 N.m (15 to 18 lbf.ft).

Thanks for the post; I ended up tightening the nuts to 25Nm as it happens as this torque just felt right. I'll admit though for the first few corners I was waiting for a lurch as the bolts let go and let all the shafts spin wildly to do their own thing.....but no such dramas.
The new unis certainly helped reduce the free play - in combination with tightening slightly the preload adjustment at the top of the steering box.
Next issue is apparently there is wear in the steering box itself which is causing the bottom end of the steering box vertical/output shaft to rotate eccentrically when turning in one direction. This is causing a slight lurch when turning, almost like the steering wheel is moving later than the steering box and the rest of the steering system. This was picked up by my rego inspector; it's not serious and didn't preclude rego but a steering box refurb is on the list of jobs to do now - probably a higher priority than some other tasks.

No problem. I reckon if you'd torqued the new bolts to 40, you may well have gotten that 'pop' :eek:.

Those manuals are well worth downloading and reading through. A veritable fountain of knowledge they are.
I put them on a usb stick, took them to office works, printed them off, put them in plastic sleeves and binders for less than $70. well worth it.
