Current trailer rules:
0-750kg ATM unbraked
over 770kg-2000kg ATM override brakes
over 2000kg-4500kg ATM electric brakes with breakaway function.
Before 1981, the unbraked ATM was about 900kg I think.
Towing vehicle:
It's not about the trailer, it's about how much the vehicle can tow. For example, a VR Commodore with a heavy duty towing package fitted is only rated to tow 1600kg braked. Even if the trailer had electric brakes, it is still only rated to tow 1600kg.
