Perentie Wiring Diagram - descent into madness

I'd love someone who's sharp on auto elec stuff to help me understand a few points.

I was excited to find the wiring diagrams on REMLR, but dismayed to have a sheet of crazy intersecting lines. I thought I'd trace a few out to enhance my understanding of the vehicle but haven't gone so far as to compare the diagram with the car itself.

Nevertheless, the "ignition" switch has five terminals : - Being
    1. Unfused power FEED,
    2. IGN circuits (feed to the voltmeter, maplight, instrument lighting and a fuse - that in turn supplies the brake lights, gauges and the washer/wiper and a few dead-ends),
    3.START,
    4. to the glowplug system and warning light (HEAT),
5."FSI" (the label on the diagram is blurry), which supplies the primary for the ignition relay (and in turn a fuse that supplies the reverse lights and a feed to the hazard switch), as well as to a couple of dead ends. It also goes to the alternator field and to the primary side of the stop/start motor relay.

So - my questions so far -

    1. Am i right that there is no relay to the glow plugs - and that glow plug power goes through the key switch?
2.Why are there separate "IGN" and "FSI" terminals on the key switch?

    wireing

Best of luck I have tried to get a grip on the wiring only to fail ,you are correct the wiring dia on the site is very hard to understand .If some smart person could transfer it into colour and readable ,I would gladly pay for it.

I printed mine out A1 and laminated them.

I'll have a good look tomorrow and see what I can work out.

I am not familiar with the Perentie wiring, but I can guess an answer to 2.

The IGN is supplying circuits that are not needed to be on when the engine is started and FSI those that are (or vice versa, not sure), and one of these is switched off when the starter is operated.

    Thanks Guys.

JDNSW- your explanation for IGN vs FSI (if that's what it does say) rings true.

I have explored further down the rabbit hole and have another conundrum -

    3. The "direction indicator" warning light on the dash is supplied by a feed from the right blinker circuit on one side and the left blinker circuit on the other, so presumably the return to earth is via the unused side. ie blinking right - dash light supplied from the right circuit and earthed via the left bulbs. Seems crazy.

    AND

    4. The "trailer" warning light is supplied from a special terminal on the flasher unit (and then goes to an earth on the other side of the bulb). How does it know when there is a trailer hooked up? (the actual location of the trailer connections to the rest of the circuit is not shown) - I presume that it can tell there are more bulbs to light by the reduction in parallel resistance in the circuit? The "trailer" warning light seems to be of no use in terms of information for the driver.

That's an accurate description of the wiring. It's a common arrangement.

Yes, too little resistance lights up the trailer light; too much resistance triggers the double-speed "bulb out" function. The trailer light is of course supposed to signal to the driver that a bulb is out in the trailer's indicators when a trailer is attached but the light doesn't repeat. It is of virtually no use to anyone, particularly as most trailers have LED lights and thereby don't trigger the trailer light anyway.

I have wanted to do this myself. Did you use one of the documents available on the web? Or do you have a better image? When I print using A4 pages at home using my own printer the quality is very poor.

    Wiring

I would be very happy to contribute to paying someone to put together an easily legible wiring diagram.
God bless the prince of darkness.

    modern wiring diagram

I've had a flick through the manual for my "normal" car, and by 2003 the wiring diagram was eight pages. There were individual diagrams for the various systems and a schematic showing the overview of the harness location (whic we also have btw)

I could imagine (slowly) outlining some of the perentie circuits as it suits my purposes and will post anything useful that i create as i go. Dont hold your breath

I can pull out some of the 300tdi Defender wiring diagrams and alter (where necessary) to suit the Perentie.

For example (just ignore the connector numbers):
