    7.50R16 Inner Tubes - Valve Stem Offset

    I am in the process of trying to track down a source for good quality, heavy-duty inner tubes for fitment to the standard 6" wide steel Perentie wheel rims.

    I have a couple of potential sources for heavier-duty "premium" inner tubes to suit radial tyre size LT235/85R16 or 7.50R16 with TR15 or TR15CW valving - no Michelin however, not in Oz, not anymore - but prior to placing any order I would like to confirm the inner tube valve stem offset. I think it is 25mm, but I really want to be sure, especially if the tubes end up being a buy-in from overseas which is a possibility.

    Can anyone confirm the required valve stem offset? It may well be the same for the Perentie tube-type rim as for a standard Defender tube-type rim as fitted to the 130 - I doubt 0.5" difference in width would be problematic.

    Any assistance appreciated.

    I can't help with the offset question but sourced 7.50 x 16 tubes with TR15 valves from my local independent tyre place.
    They do a lot of truck tyres and keep tubes in stock, I think I remember about $25 each which is not much more than paying for a puncture repair.
    There must be companies over your part of the World that would keep stock

    This is the company I used Ruband Tyres I have no involvement with them except as a satisfied customer.

    Well, I think I may have the information on inner tube valve stem offset I was chasing.


    The Army Repair Parts Schedule in "Group L - Wheel Rim, Tyre, Tube and Nut" for Item No. 002 has the Designation:-
    INNER TUBE, PNEUMATIC TIRE,
    VEHICULAR 7.50-16, VALVE
    TR25, ON CENTRE,
    AGRICULTURAL STEERING WHEELS
    and the following NSN, Manufacturer Code/Part No. and Supplier Code/Part No. information:-
    2610 66-033-2031
    20342/346 TR15
    Z5394/AYG8045


    My interpretation from this is that the original inner tube designation specified TR25 valving on-centre i.e. no offset. I interpret the Supplier Code reference as the supplied tube having TR15 valving, which makes sense as both TR25 and TR15 valve stems fit the Perentie rim hole diameter of 0.625" (5/8"), and TR15 valving is far more common than TR25 valving, which from what I can gather more prevalent in inner tubes for aircraft.


    So, while I will attempt to investigate the Supplier Code reference a little more, so far it looks like if I proceed down the replacement heavy-duty inner tubes path it will be 7.50R16 size with TR15 valving on-centre.


    Thanks for the reply Gromit. So far I have had some luck with an industrial tyre wholesaler based in Toowoomba who has indicated they can source through their importer heavy-duty 7.50R16 inner tubes with TR15 valving which have a thicker wall than standard weight tubes and which are apparently patch-repairable. I will need to confirm valve offset of the tube(s), but fingers-crossed they will be suitable. Advised pricing was $30 plus GST each with freight from the importer in Sydney of about $25 for the half-dozen.

    I got some from a mob in Echuca about a year ago. The bloke called them Bobcat tubes. Don't know what the valve offset was, but he said they are a common tube in agricultural tyres, and the bobcat tubes wear well.

    I haven't ended up buying my tubes yet; I haven't had to upgrade tyres yet and touch wood I've had no troubles with the current tubes to date.

    I HAVE decided I will only go with Michelin however. After a hell of a lot of research I have tracked down two sources for the Michelin 16J tubes required; one is in Melbourne and one is in the UK.

    The Melbourne source is Stuckey Tyres, and I dealt with Ken Stuckey in my discussions - a very helpful guy. He brings Michelin tubes in from the UK, and from memory I think they were in the order of $53 a piece. At the time he had some in stock but not the 6 I was chasing.

    The UK source is Vintage Tyres. They can supply the Michelin 16j tubes for 28 GBP a piece, and freight was going to be 45 GBP.

    The Michelin 16j tubes from both sources are only available with a TR13 valve so for fitment to the Perentie rims they would require fitting with a plastic spacer which can be supplied with the tubes.

    I just bought 5 of Bridgestone Desert Duellers in 750-16 and asked for tubes with the fat 5/8 valve stems. They are the thickest tubes I have seen. Thicker than my Michelins. Check them out.

    On the way to Cooma 2018 i had a flat going up the hill from Cann River. I had the tyre repaired at the Bombala Tyre Centre. The owner where very helpful and extremely knowledgeable about tubes and he pointed out that i had the incorrect tubes fitted because the valve stem diameter was too small. He fitted up a tube with the correct diameter and length to suit the Series 3 Rim.
    I suggest giving him a call and checking on which tubes he suggests and what is available.
    He was a really great guy ! and as my vehicle had new tyres and tubes he chacked all the wheel and removed the grit and debris from the other wheels and all is well.
    What wonderful service can be found in the towns away from the city.
