    fuel gauge issue

My fuel gauge has been very temperamental/unreliable. yesterday i drained the fuel tank as lot of crap in sedimenter -i also removed sender unit to inspect and all looked okay with wiring/connections -put it all back/ reconnected wires at tank and now my gauge doesn't even move off empty even though almost full-when i removed positive lead at tank the gauge went to completely full-what's the deal with that-bad earth?

My perentie decided to read a max of 3/4 tank a while ago. While I havent yet investigated why, I'm led to beleive that it's common for the float to fill with fuel.

However with lucas wiring, bad earths are a real possibility, as are rotting push connectors.

Thats worrying as when you remove the positive it should read empty and when you ground the positive ( not through the sender ) it should read full.

I suspect the gauge itself may not be effectively earthed - it needs to be.
