Broken Axle - Front Drivers
My experience with a broken axle just in case it helps anyone.
Just to set the scene, we were out cutting up firewood at Mt Disappointment; rain was hammering down, clothes soaked through drowned rat kind of wet.
Playing in the mud, came back onto dirt road and hit the bump to the path too hard, heard a loud crack, didn't think much of it.
Ready to drive home, took it out of centre diff lock, no power to any wheels in any gear.
Jacked up front and back and found power to back wheels with centre diff lock turning opposite spinning only one wheel. Front turning free both sides.
Drove home without my vacuum tubes in the pump, someone up there decided that was a good idea and I was none the wiser, filled my pants when I felt no brakes as well back in town to the first round about. Now sorted. Brake lines were also full of water so we're bled.
Backlash on and off the accelerator - like thunder! Cringed every time I was on and off the gas. Way worse than any normal amount.
Pulled out RTC6862 CV and 33/10 spline half shafts.
After many opinions (a suggestion of an entire Puma front end from wreckers?) and much deliberation, landed on putting in 10/23 spline hi-tuffs in the end with Spicer AEU2522s and hi-tuff drive flanges to suit. Ordered shafts from KLR in Sydney and CVs from AMV Ringwood, both incredibly helpful bunches.
ALSO! The passenger CV would not come out to put final circlips on. This was incredibly frustrating. Tried to slide hammer, amongst other things, including some choice words, wouldn't budge.
Stripped it all down again to find a burr had ruined my day on the bronze bush in the stub axle. Cut it out with a sharp knife and carefully sanded it. Used a 7/16 bolt in the end of the CV with an eyelet welded on the end to keep it pulled by hand out whilst rebuilding, particularly for putting in stub axle.
Sitting on the train writing this on the way home from work because I got my first flat last night and discovered the Perentie does NOT come with a jack and iron...off to Supercheap.
Hope this helps someone out. If not at least have a good laugh at my homemade 1 shot grease packet. Didn't end well.
