    Spare Wheel Hoist not working...

I have a slight issue lowering my spare wheel. The roll pin which secures the shaft to the mechanism is missing. Would be a pretty easy fix except that the spare wheel is tight in place, blocking access to the actual spare wheel hoist's mechanism. I'm scratching my head.

    Here's a picture:

Anyone know if there is some sort of accessible secondary release trip to allow the wheel to be lowered without using the shaft?

    Cheers!

    Sorted.

Here's the procedure to (rapidly) lower your spare if the hoist is not working for any reason...

Step 1 - Carefully remove the nut from the bolt holding the bracket to the chain and get out of the way - or prop up the spare with lumps of wood, jack, jerrycans, etc. for safety.

Step 2 - Go get your pick handle off the bonnet, and through the rear wheel well, use the end of it to smack the tyre. Mine took one hard strike and wheel dropped immediately.

As suggested to me on Facebook, you can also deflate the tyre to give yourself a bit more wiggle-room and maybe you'll be able to disengage the bracket from the wheel rim. Not terribly effective on a Hi-Miler tyre like mine, but worth a try.

So what was the problem with the hoist?

The roll pin shown in the diagram in the original post had been replaced with a Tek screw at some stage before I acquired the vehicle. Predictably, the centre of the screw was chewed out, so the winding shaft just turned in its socket. I'll replace it with a high tensile bolt.

Underslung dual jerrycan carrier fitted in place of the spare for an upcoming trip. For said upcoming trip I'll be carrying two spare wheels - fitted to either side of the ROPS a la Ye Olde Mk. 1 RFSV.
