    KLR Turbo failure

Just wondering if anyone has had a KLR turbo failure? I installed the upgrade turbo kit on one of the 6x6s a few months back, yesterday whilst coming out of the bush it lost power, blew a heap of smoke out the exhaust and then was in the early stages of running away..luckily my operator had the sense to stall the motor before any damage was done. I towed it back home and pulled the turbo out and found that the shaft had snapped in half, the exhaust veins shredded, but luckily the intake vanes only slightly damaged. This new system only has about 4000km on it, so Im interested to know why it failed. Awaiting a response and replacement turbo from KLR.

Haven't heard of them failing, not much in the forum on it either from what I have seen.

They are pretty good with the warranty and customer service so they would likely want it back so they can see why it failed as well!

Yes Im really keen to know whats happened, and don't get me wrong, this isn't a `bag out KLR` thread, as I know they are a quality company who put a lot of research and effort into there products. Coming from an earthmoving background, I know that things can fail.

Short of an installation issue or something getting sucked through it, a failure this early is likely to be a manufacturing fault in the turbo - quite rare but it does happen.

I can only see it as a manufacturing fault as the unit is supplied as a complete turbo..it would be unlikely that anything could enter the turbo as the air cleaners were renewed at the time of installation..

Looks and sounds like a rare manufacturing issue, I've had a sub 100k td5 unit do the same on an immaculately maintained defender, unusual but possible.

I know of another that did the same at 250km, not 250kkm, but not here to bag them out either, it happens and has happened before.

Had one go on one of the perentie cargos after only a few thousand kms. KLR was outstanding in handling it. I've heard the turbo manufacturer is not as easy to deal with as in the past, but KLR took care of it proper, regardless. Mine appeared as it could have been starved of oil, but no other issues on the new unit and no changes other than the new turbo unit itself.
