.. which also begs the question why are you needing glow plugs? Above the snow line I can understand, but in normal practice they start fine without them...

down to minus 4 and I didnt need them.

So near as I've been able to work out they mostly seem to be fitted for 2 reasons.

    1. hey this is cool, everyone else has them why dont we put some in?
    2. to fill the hole that you use to do a compression test.

(ok so they help if you have a lazy battery or starter and in extreme cold (-10 or lower))

I have never needed them before but at 5 am at Orange friday morning for the 1st time it would not fire up cleanly there was deep frost everywhere , when i put a meter on the plugs there was no power going to them , when it did fire up there was a dense fog coming out of the exhaust till it started to run cleanly .

Well it turned out that the glow plugs are not working ,but it was the lift pump that was causing the starting problems . If I gave it a couple of hand pumps it would start fine . So for 200 bucks I had the lift pump reconditioned , cut seats new springs valves etc and we are back to starting fine again. Glad it did it on the last day ofP1010015.jpgP1010027.jpgP1010015.jpg a 9000 k 2 month trip
