    National Perentie Meet

    Hi All,

    This is more of a trip report - but I thought that I would post it in here because it is Perentie specific....

    Last Friday I teamed up with some other Victorian Perentie owners and headed north for the "first ever national Perentie Meet" (at least that's what Australian Frontline Machinery was calling it).

    The convoy consisted of 3*6x6's, and 1*4x4 (me). Stopping off along the way:



    We camped at the Albury Equestrian centre - $15 a night for an un-powered site, with nice clean toilets and showers. There wasn't any horse competition on so the place was basically empty.

    Saturday we arrived early in the morning as other Perentie owners started to turn up:

    The basic set-up of the event was:

    1) One warehouse had 50 Perenties for sale. Some refurbished, some wrecks, some came with RWC, some without, quite a few "non-compliance" ones (either no compliance plate OR the chassis # did not match the compliance plate)
    2) One warehouse full of pallets of parts
    3) One warehouse full of pallets of parts & tyres.
    4) Outside - trailers, Mack Trucks & Unimogs.

    In my eyes - there were three main problems with this auction. I realise that this is the same for everyone, and it's the same for every auction, but it did leave a lot of people nervous.

    1) Pallets - there was 600 lots for sale. Most lots contained a mixture of used, new or refurbished parts.
    It was very difficult to tell sometimes which was which..

    2) You couldn't pick and choose what you wanted - you had to purchase an entire pallet.
    An example of this was - there was a pallet of "major service kits" (filters and gaskets).
    Everybody thought that this was a great idea - however the pallet had 12+ of these kits and eventually sold for $1,700 I believe.

    3) Unknown condition of the Land Rovers / non-compliance on a few of them.
    I was looking at some of the wrecks when a staff member walked over and asked me if he could help me.
    I said: "Yeah - I am looking at a few of these wrecks, but how do I know what's wrong with them? Did they all drive into this warehouse under their own steam?"
    He replied "Yes - everything in this building was driven in here"
    Later I spoke to a different staff member and asked the exact same question - the reply I got was "No - those 12 over there had to be placed in here by a fork lift"
    I realise that it's an auction - buyer beware - but there might be some people could very well have been caught out if they didn't do their homework.
    (On Sunday I watched some wrecks drive out of the warehouse, some towed out, and some moved by being lifted by a fort lift - suggesting that something was seriously wrong with it)

    On Saturday morning there was multiple "free" boxes of stuff - those lucky enough to get in early managed to pickup some missing parts...



    I managed to win one lot - a plastic box of miscellaneous products:















    On Sunday - after everybody picked up their lots, there was a swap meet... A lot of people that I spoke to purchased a lot for one item, and then tried to off-load what was left at the swap meet.

    I purchased an entire heater assembly ($50), a heater core ($50) & an ignition switch ($20):

    What was my take on the weekend?

    It was great meeting some new Perentie owners. It was great seeing the different modifications that some people have made to their vehicles.
    It was great to pick-up some free stuff, and great to pick-up some cheap parts.

    The negative side was - there seemed to be a lot of dealers walking around, buying up the pallets - which meant that the average owner couldn't afford to buy much. A lot of people have complained on facebook that it was a "waste of time for the average punter".

    I suppose the good news is - that those parts are out there, and will be sold on in due time.

    The event organisers are planning another event next year - so there must still be quite a bit of stock / Perenties in the army's hands... (Nobody that I spoke to could give me an exact answer though)
