Hazard lights only on right side of vehicle

    G’day all,

New owner of a RFSV and looking to get it up to scratch for its Vic roadworthy. At the moment most of the electrical system has been addressed, including replacing the hazard light switch in the dash which wasn’t working. My indicators work both side on all globes, but when I operate the hazard switch only the right side indicators work. Anyone have an idea? I’m studying the wiring diagrams to see if I can spot anything of note there.

The hazard light switch switches the wires to the blinkers away from the blinker switch. I would suspect one of two possibilities - either the new switch is faulty (not at all unheard of with this switch), or the wiring to the LH blinkers has been modified so that it actually bypasses the hazard switch, probably to get the blinkers working with the original faulty switch (or because of damaged wiring), the hazards being regarded as non-essential.

    Hi John,

Thanks for your reply. The hazard lights worked well after the switch was replaced however. Faulty new switch?

Seems problem solved. Took Barney for a few laps of the block (live in the bush) and I got some charge as it appears that the auxiliary battery was too low. Hazard lights now work and Barney is idling out the front to get some more charge into the auxiliary.

Welcome to the Coil Sprung Military Landrover section of the Forum Greg.

Good you sorted out the hazard light issue. I hope you won’t have to cut any of the front or rear bars to get it VIC licensed.

I hate hearing the stories of the licensing departments around Australia making owners butcher their Perenties. If you do have to there are a couple of mods you can do to get around it. At least in WA that is. But our licensing laws may be a bit easier over here.

Also out if personal interest, as I own a RFSV myself that came out of the Pilbara, where did you pick up your RFSV from? They are pretty rare to get your hands on at the moment for anything under 30K.

Enjoy your RFSV. They are awesome Perenties.

    Regards Warrick.

    G’day Warwick,

Forgive my tardiness in replying. It would seem that it was actually a loose wire as the problem has resurfaced, so I spoke too soon! I’m also hopeful that nothing has to be trimmed off to comply, I think we may be a bit more mindful here in Vic of the nature of these vehicles. Nothing has been mentioned so far, it has been in for a pre roadworthy check and it didn’t hit the radar.

I picked mine up from a gent in Tassie, it doesn’t have it GM120 but the colour scheme would indicate NORFORCE or 51 FNQR. It seems in pretty good nick, it’s in with an Indie LR mechanic at the moment sorting out a few issues. So fingers crossed. I’m going to sort out the rims and tyres when it gets through roadworthy and then probably turbo it up down the track. Otherwise I plan to keep it pretty standard inside, sans seat. What have you done in regard to yours?

    Regads,

    Greg

    Hi Greg,

I have kept mine pretty much original. I have changed out the rims and tyres from the solid centre split rims over to the Wolf rims and BF Goodrich mud terrains. It does drive so much nicer on these wheels and tyres and I would recommend doing that as an improvement for every day driving. I also fitted a light bar to the front bull bar and built a tow bar that incorporates the pintal hitch and conventional hitch. I also fitted the engine watchdog to monitor engine oil pressure and real engine temperature.

I have been using mine as a daily driver for the last 5 years but have now purchased another vehicle to use as a daily driver due to the need to be able to now transport a young family. I have done over 130 000 kms over that last 5 years and loved every minute of it. My RFSV will now be used pretty much for getting away on remote trips in WA which I am looking forward too later this year.

Good luck getting yours licensed and setting it up.

A few images below of my Norforce RFSV.

    Regards Warrick.

Nice setup Warwick! Mine doesn’t have the rear step either, so I’m assuming from looking at your pintle setup that the previous owner had similar which necessitated its removal. Good idea with the watchdog! My cam net rack isn’t installed though I still have it, as well as the third set in the back. What’s your inside set up? Those bins are going to come in handy for stowage. That and the Frontrunner Wolf packs. I noticed the BFG’s, are they 255/85? Not much choice it would seem. It will be the BFG or Toyo’s!
When I get it back and registered I’ll put up some pics. So yours is ex NORFORCE? Mine hasn’t got the red through it, maybe makes it 51 FNQR, not sure. I’m ex ARA but not infantry 🤣, more research needed, gee the GM120 would have been handy.

    regards,

    Greg

    Hi Greg,

I do have the rear step but it has been removed and put into storage. The previous owner of mine was the ADF as I purchased my RFSV through Australian Frontline Machinery when they were using Grays Online for military disposal sales.

The tyres are BF Goodrich 255-85-16. They are a taller tyre and I think work out to be a bit over 33" in the old measurements. It gives the RFSV a bit of a higher cruising speed being a slightly bigger diameter than the original Michelin tyres on the solid split rims. I really only cruise on 90 - 95 kms per hour max anyway. I find that a good balance of noise and fuel economy on the open road. The BF Goodrich 255-85-16's are a very good tyre both on and off road too. I have easily seen 100 000 kms out of my first set of tyres. I would recommend them but they are at the higher end of the price point than other tyres on the market, but you get what you pay for. I have replaced the worn BF Goodrich 255-85-16's with new ones.

Yes mine is an original Pilbara Norforce vehicle and the RFSV's that were auctioned in Western Australia to my knowledge were 99% Pilbara Norforce. I believe a few Pilbara Norforce vehicles did find their way to the East Coast as I seem to remember at least 1 being offered for auction at Minto a few years ago. All the Pilbara Norforce RFSV's that I have seen have the red Pilbara, Sand and Olive Green camouflage paint on them, however I did see someone selling one a few months ago in Victoria with the Black, Sand and Olive camouflage paint scheme. The owner had a plate riveted onto the ROPS stating it was Pilbara Norforce though. Is that the one that you purchased?

Interestingly the Pilbara Norforce RFSV's that I have seen in Western Australia haven't had the Pilbara Norforce plate attached.

My inside set up is exactly the same as it came from the ADF except I did have to remove the rear dickie seat to get it licensed on Western Australian plates. I have put the dickie seat into storage. I have met another owner here in WA though who had an engineer approve the dickie seat as a third seat and it has been installed facing forward for his daughter to sit in. So it is possible here in WA to do if you get it engineered.

Good luck getting yours on the road. Look forward to seeing some images of it when you get a chance to post them. The 3 images below are my RFSV as purchased from Frontline Machinery. The 4th image is mine with the rear step and brand new BF's.

The last image is the Pilbara plate attached to the ROPS of the Black, Sand and Olive camouflage paint scheme RFSV that was for sale a couple of months ago in Victoria.

    Regards Warrick.

    Hi Warwick,

It looks like it was in great condition when you bought it. I haven’t had the opportunity to try out the PTO winch as yet, yours looks better maintained. Mine was sold in 2015 from AFM in Vic and that person sold it on to the fellow I bought it from in Tassie. It still had Vic rego up until a few days before I bought it from him, he had just returned the plates.

I did see that RFSV with the Pilbara patch up for sale but no I didn’t buy his. It looks more of a patch not plate to me that he has added himself. I can’t remember if that is that the same one that was for sale for $47K? There was another RFSV for sale as well in Bendigo around the same time, probably should have bought that one as it was already registered in Vic lol.

As an aside, did you have to get longer wheel studs for the wolf’s? Yup top speed is not eye watering it’s just more engaging I find. I’m planning on storing the dickie seat and the bonnet tools before roadworthy just in case. But the colour scheme I’ve got to look into, the red being very much a reflection of the iron up that way.

    regards,

    Greg
