    gear box oil

Last year towing a 1.5 ton caravan ,mainly off road , my transfer gear thrust washes let go .The Land Rover expert of many years in Rockhampton , said it is a week point of the transmission and I should run synthetic 20 /40 oil

Assuming we're talking the LT95 4 speed manual box here? It should run engine oil - I use whatever I put in the engine, in the box - just easier that way for me. Were you running gear oil? That's a no no in these boxes. Not sure if the thrust washers are a weak point - Bearman would be able to answer that if he sees this thread being the guru on these boxes.

I see no issue with running a 20w/40 synthetic oil.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.

Or you could upgrade the intermediate shaft to a tapered roller bearing one like in the military LT95's

    15/40 as per the manual.

I've pulled down boxes that were on their second clutch and +500K Km that only needed refreshing which ran purely on engine oil.

The oil is not the issue. Make sure there is no pressure being put on the shift lever.

Given the sub forum, I assume we're talking about a Perentie? If so, seems its been retrofitted with a civvy/non TRB transfer? And yes, the non TRB intermediate shafts can be a weak point, particularly when towing.
