    Picked up the Perentie

It arrived earlier than expected, only thing I'm annoyed with is no spare, apart from that it's the best fun I've had with my pants on in a long while, Ness(daughter) loves it too.

Certainly rides better than our 76 Cruiser.

1990 Land Rover 4x4 Perentie FFR 50-215, 5 AVN REGT, Townsville last in service 2017, then Meeandah Barracks Pinkenba, Brisbane.

Now to search for a spare, first of many questions.

Is the Defender/late Series the same rim.

What's the big hose that looks like it attaches to the alternator(my guess is for the extra batteries?)

Does the FFR canvas cover come all the way down or like this one (which looks brand new) doesn't.

Front and back blackout lights have been removed, is it worth replacing them or are they illegal now.

    Picked up the Perentie

Congrats on the purchase. I wouldn’t bother replacing black out lights. The hose (can’t see any in pics) may be for the exhaust to ensure fumes are away from the vehicle when batteries are charging.

*Being a radio vehicle (FFR) the big "hose" is the electrical feed for the 4 radio batteries on each side.
*If you note there is the normal alternator that feeds the 12V electrics for the vehicle.
*FFR canvas covers down to the step up, yours is a std canvas.
*You can fit a standard drop down tailgate if you want then the canvas will be correct.
*There are at least 2 write ups on doing the tailgate conversion.

*Check your tyres for a date stamp, 4 digits, first two tell you the week and the last two tell you the year.
*I have yet another Perentie in the workshop prepping for a roadworthy and the original army tyres are 12 years old which makes them a danger to the owner and other road users.

*Blackout lights have always been not road legal as it disables the brake lights.
*Spare, yes wheels are pretty well the same, except the army ones were made in Australia and if you look at them they have that raised section between each wheel lug hole

Started working on getting it ready for rego, looks like the ADF or Frontline have done all the work for making the perentie "pedestrian safe" with the removal of the bonnet brackets, blackout lights, protrusions from the rear and front bars and so on so yesterday, started looking over the car for oil leaks and things that don't work.

Surprisingly not a lot is wrong with it, no oil leaks(so far) front drivers park light and reversing light not working now replaced, that's all so far.

Today will be giving it a clean inside and out, replacing out the keyless ignition for a keyed ignition and putting in door locks, Saturday it goes in for new tyres, while this is happening, we'll pick up all the gear for a complete air and oil filter and fluids change.

We have given ourselves 2 weeks to get it ready by getting an unregistered permit for that period.

The drivability with no power steering is not as bad as I thought it would be, though a bit notchy turning left it seems fine, of course I'll have it looked at.

On that, is there oil or grease in the steering box??

Well off to work on it.

    Baz.
    Cheers Baz.

Pretty certain it will be oil in the steering box, although I have to admit my experience with unpowered 110 steering boxes is nil!

I didn't get a chance to do any of the above, spent most of this arvo trying to get the brake lights to work, it's a dual filament with the taillight working but not the brake, both sides too which is bloody frustrating.
    Cheers Baz.
