Sounds like you're doing it right. I used two pieces of coat hanger about 140mm long then bent them at right angles about 70mm from each end. Worked a treat...
Ok - I have tried sticking coat hangers in the small holes at the front of the radio in my 2003 130 Defender and pull it out. Nothing. Can pull out the radio and the surrounds a bit and see that there are some sort of springs holding it in.
How do I get it out?
Cheers.

I only have two holes - one on each side.
Getting close to reefing it out and hoping for the best!!!
It could be one of two types:
1) Two flat rectangular shaped holes that you push metal "keys" into to push the lock tabs out of place and then pull the radio out.
The keys come with new radios and are pieces of metal about 10-15cm in length, around 5mm high and 1mm wide, with a little tab on the end to hold onto.
You need to push both keys in at the same time and whilst they are pushed in, try and wiggle the radio out.
2) Look closely at the holes, they may be an allen key type.
These require around a 2.5mm allen key, stick the allen key in and turn the allen screw until the locks holding the radio disengage.
I had trouble getting the Puma radio out and ended up using wire larger than coat-hanger wire. Also had to push it in further that I initially thought.
Once the radio was out it was obvious what was needed - but of course you don't know that till you get it out![]()
Thanks to all - going to try allen key tonight - if not...... brute force
Success! It was the allen keys that did it. Thanks to all.
