I found yet another free app (a units converter) that downloads adverts from Google and costs money. A quick use of the app cost $2.83 in data charges. I've since deleted that app. It was from the iTunes store.
If you only want a phone, why not ditch the iPhone and go back to your old phone. It's probably a Nokia, and as a straight phone goes probably better than an iPhone anyway.

All too expensive. I send, on average, about one SMS per week. Most weeks I send none.
I make about one telephone call a week - if that. Nearly every prepaid plan has unused credits expiring after 30 days. My current Telstra plan has the credit expiring after 6 months so a $30 recharge lasts me for ages. My present credit expires in April 2011 and the calls are a fixed $1 each.
The iPhone has replaced my XDA IIi PDA phone which was killed when a phone handset fell onto the screen.
I have a Nokia 6500 slide but it recently developed a few lines across the screen just in the right place to obscure phone numbers in the phone book. The Samsung C5220 NextG blue tick phone is what I use if I go into the country but it's not a great phone to use and its screen is too small to read without a magnifying glass.
As noted above, I don't make phone calls so it doesn't matter to much about usability. I need the phone so I can be called. I generally don't return missed calls.
I don't want to waste my credits on data - which costs about $1 per Mb with Telstra.
and a bit like buying a 4WD when you have no intention of going off road or even towing ?
If you're not using the functionality of the phone, why be tied to it.
(btw they are hopeless as a hands free phone where you want voice control, my biggest disappointment with the iPhone)

I use all the other feature, e.g., apps, contact list, music player, etc. Just not the phone but it is included so I can use it when needed - just as I did with my previous Windows CE PDA phone.
The PDA features are what I use most.
I think I'll downgrade to iOS 4.2 to see if the block cellular data option does the trick.
Do you want your old, old phone back Ron?
I gave up on figuring it out & passed it on to my Mum. I don't think she's too keen on it.
I'll ask her on Saturday :).
No, Scott. I don't want it. It's locked to Vodaphone.
I've downgraded the iPhone to iOS 4.2.1 - it's much slower but I can turn Cellular Data off. I checked my account and Telstra charged me $2/MB - I thought it was bad enough when I assumed it was $1/MB!
