This goes for other things as simple as extension speakers or even clock radios. Most of these ancillary devices have various base adapters already to ensure the device sits (or leans) at the correct angle to ensure good connection. None of these are designed or intended for an extra adapter instead of a device.
Your lightning adapter cable isn't worth a tinkers curse to solve that problem!! You need the genuine, solid, lightning to 30 pin adapter (currently valued at AUD35), and that leaves the iPhone hanging around in mid air. The added height, at best, is mechanically weak and unstable and, at worst, just may render the device unusable by it simply falling over.
Yes, I could get some convenience potentially by leaving this adapter plugged into the bottom of the phone under most circumstances, except when actually carrying the phone around.
Apple makes much truck about the simplicity, interchangeability and convenience of its devices. The need for this adapter widget just screws that up royally.
Them's my thoughts anyway, and why I won't be going down the iPhone 5 path (or its successor) for some time yet.
Cheers,
