Ralph, 4G provides much faster bandwidth - that is all. At present, the actual delivery of 4G is quite patchy....Telstra offer the best coverage...Vodaphone none, but 4G availability will improve rapidly over the coming months/years. A 4G phone simply uses 3G when there is no 4G signal.

So it's not really a question of "do I need it?"....4G won't give you access to anything 3G won't. What it does give the user is a seamless experience doing any smart function on the applicable device, because it is significantly faster than a corresponding 3G device. It is very noticeable. I clocked my iPhone 5 @ 45.16 Mbsp download and 39.79Mbsp upload speed when I had 5 bar 4G (in my living room), and that means the thing is effectively instantaneous when executing any phone (internet) function.

So - if the cost of a 4G handset is too great, just get a 3G phone. If you can afford it, a 4G phone will provide better performance in the long term.

What you really need to decide on is this - which ecosystem do you want to use? Android or iOS (or widows etc). This is a no brainer question for most people and is really the decisive factor in handset choice.

I've never used either so this is the difficulty. No brainer you say? Maybe, but what comparison method did they use to so easily make a choice? Ahhhh the dilemma. Should the money stretch, I'll prob go i5 but only because my son has an iPod and mum at least knows how to use that! If not, 3G S3 will be the go simply coz it's not apple and most feedback say it's a solid phone.

    Cheers

The no brainier comment was prefixed by, "for most"....this means that most people are either extremely pro one, or anti another ecosystem. I understand you are neither. I'm trying to help!

Comparison methods? Let me give you my answer. In my opinion, iOS is so far ahead of anything else - so I use iPhone (+ iPad/iMac). Why iPhone in particular? 2 benchmarks that I feel are fundamental for using digital gadgets, and I suspect these will matter to you too...

    1) Security - very important for obvious reasons, and iOS is a strong performer here.... http://www.zdnet.com/the-best-mobile...p7-1339314044/

    2) App availability (and apps made specifically for the type of gadget you are using) - iOS all the way.....http://bgr.com/2011/12/05/available-...app-milestone/

Consider any other factor, important to you, in making your decision too of course. And then look at how each ecosystem scores in regard to your important factors. If you don't know what is important to you, then perhaps this final link (from me!) might help....

Hey Scallops, No offence intended, I know you are trying to help and I appreciate it!
All I meant by the no brainer comment was that people are very pro or anti in this area and I don't know why! Must be a holden/ford thing or else daddy had one so I'll get one too!

I sat down with guys at work who have iPhone 5 and others with 4G GalaxyS3. They let me play and make a call etc and I was impresed with both but am leaning now toward the 4G S3.
Based purely on the proprietry nature of apple annoys me. Not saying it isn't good, just maybe I am not ready to pledge allegiance lol.

That being said, another guy at work had a Motorola Razr and I like it as well, so I think android for me and wife this time around.

Thanks for the help and please don't think ill of me lol.

    Cheers
    Ralph

Congrats on making a decision. I'm sure the Samsung phone will be a good thing for you.
