Cheap android phones

If anyone is looking for a good but cheap android phone that is not on a plan or prepaid and is unlocked, i can recommend 2 of the Oukitel chinese brand phones.

K4000 Pro and K10000

OUKITEL K4000 Pro 5.0 inch 4G Smartphone - Free Shipping | Everbuying

Oukitel K10000 5.5 inch Android 5.1 4G Smartphone - Free Shipping | Everbuying

I bought the K4000 for my wife as an alternative to spending big $$$ outright on a phone and not wanting to go on a plan.
Its not perfect but is pretty fast with its quad core cpu and 2gig ram , battery life is probably its biggest advantage over equivalent smart phones.
The K4000 has a 4600mah battery and the K10000 which my brother bought has a whopping 10000mah battery which is good for nearly 2 weeks of running time.
For less than $120 delivered for the K4000 you cant go wrong, i have been giving it a run and the only real negatives i have found are the lack of a notification led and that fact that the charger port is on the top instead of the usual position on the bottom of the phone.

And how is this for a tough screen -

Video needs to be re-made with some Australian hard wood, not that chinese pine

I had a ZTE something or other that I got from office works for $55. Returned it after a few weeks as it kept turning itself off. Went back to my Nokia N95, beast phone.

Only cons that come to mind are -

No led for notifications - txt, email etc. i can live with that.
Charge port is on top instead of the bottom, again no biggie.
Lack of accessories but they are available from China.
My choice would have been to buy a ruggerdized phone like one of these below but since my wife didnt like this one i thought i'd give it a run.

Darn ! Pity I didn't find this earlier...
- Last week I ordered a $125 cheapy 'smart' phone to replace my 13 month old Samsung S4... the one I bought for the camera / display more than anything else...the same one that I chucked in the bin... 'cos the motherboard/charging circuitry fried itself and the metalwork went over 82 degrees.

The bigger one looks nice, perhaps would have been a better replacement for my Wife's old iPhone4, the one wearing out with 'Scrabble' ...

Battery life is Impressive. Wife's '4' needs to live on the charger... my (trashed) S4 might last 2 days on standby... maybe.

Instead I bought her a new iPhone SE. $679 from AppleStore (same size as the '5' but with the insides and camera of the '6 )
But trying to transfer everything over from 4 to SE is too much of a nightmare,- so much so that tomorrow I'll take Wife and both phones back to the Apple store...and get them to do it. - If I try iTunes one more time I'm going to smash it !

Dunno whether I'ts because I'm a doubly Grumpy Old Man, or the Apple operating systems are not as 'User-Friendly' as I found Android to be.

Assuming that "Smart" phones only last till out of warranty.... I see no disadvantage in buying a NON-branded unit. And if it lasts more than 18 months... - Bonus!

Wife has just come back from the Apple Store. Very interesting way they do things... Apparently, they set up some cloning 'App', and the Apple Team Member / Guru walks the client(s) through the entire process, - like a group class. Two and a half hours in total, and her 'Contacts' missed the boat, VIBER is still only partly installed (She had to re-purchase a new version.) and her delightful bird-call ringtone has,,, flown the nest.

Adding up the purchase price and all the time both of us have spent plus the travelling... the Upgrade-exercise has co$t us nearly $900 for a $679 phone.
Given that they have a "unique" approach to store layout &selling procedures, the service from their Bricks & Mortar shop is... disappointing.

By contrast, it only took VIRGIN a couple of minutes to activate the new, blank (tiny) SIM card, with the bonus that the old & new will be active for several hours.
Indeed they were so helpful that she took their advice and converted from Pre-Paid to a 'Plan'. That only took them 40 minutes including Credit and Identity checks.

All of which makes the Android $120 or so 'cheapies' SO much better value...
