Sensible decision, the extra 40 intermediate channels in the later 80 channel sets seem to be rarely used anyhow.

It enables owners of the hundreds of thousands of 40 channel sets to continue to use them legally. Doubt that legality or otherwise would have stopped them anyway.

For the info of non-users the later 80 channel sets can be used to communicate with the earlier 40 channel sets by using only channels 1-40. The channels numbered above 40 in the later sets are located between the earlier 1-40 channels.

The channel "width" in the newer sets has been reduced by half to accomodate the extras.

Unlikely - I've got 2 40 channel units that still work fine, why ditch them?

At work we currently have over 2,000 40 channel units in our plant and trucks. Whilst most of those will have gone to God within 10 years and new stuff gets 80 channels as standard, some of the bigger gear will still be around - think $750K plus plant. While you would assume with gear like that it would be a no brainer to upgrade - that never happens. If the old 40 channel still works it will never get replaced.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.
