After 2 years of flawless operation my NBN was taken out yesterday morning at 9am by a very close lightning strike.
the NBN tech has an appointment to look at the line tomorrow afternoon.
good result from online chat with Optus.

unfortunately my Pc which was on a LAN direct connection was also taken out . Dead as a dodo.
I hope that this is not the start of an opus.
the wifi on the modem still works so we are getting by using hotspots , then switching to wifi to print.
Time will tell whether the modem part of the modem is dead.

I have never had NBN nor will I ever be able to connect to it due to where I live so it looks like I will be stuck with WIFI But at least that is reliable albeit slow.

Might be time to change your moniker from Geraldton to something a bit more accurate on the assumption the town is not only on wifi? I like discorevy's "Nirvana near Albany" location.

I understood EVERYONE in OZ would be eventually connected to NBN regardless of, if you wanted it or not with Skymuster Satellite. or Fixed Wireless Broadband.

    Is that incorrect then?

Actually, it would be more correct to say "everyone in Oz (except the really difficult cases)".

    The really difficult cases include

    • Those for which there is no terrestrial cable feasible (without excessive cost), no line of sight to a wireless tower (without excessive cost by putting in extra towers), and no line of sight to the satellite
    • Those living in multiple occupancy buildings where the landlord/body corporate will not pay for cabling
    • Those premises that do not exist on NBN's geographic database

There may be others I have not thought of. Any of these cases can exist almost anywhere, although they are more likely in rugged terrain in remote areas - but since there are more people in cities, it is likely most of the people affected are in cities.

I live 30k's out of Geraldton and I have absolutely NO intention of giving out my GPS coordinates on a public forum

So what's wrong with "30 km from Geraldton". Could be part way to the Abrolhos, but at least we won't get confused and think you are a townie having NBN problems.

Then again that's an oxymoron - everyone has problems with NBN. Either the latest Windows update is at fault, or I've had 6 dropouts today alone (and yes I'm pretty close the the CBD in Fremantle.

    Update.
NBN rep came at about 11.30 am and decreed the modem dead. I agree as saw his test modem log on.

chatted online with Optus for about an hour until an Optus person called me back.
After about another half hour agreed to send new modem but said Optus now only send with technician and first available 3 /3 .
She then offered to see if they could get one couriered.
    so I now await developments.
she gave us 25 gigs on my wife’s Optus phone to tide us over.
I guess I cannot be too critical as Sydney has had a lot of storms recently.
I claimed on NRMA for the blown laptop but no word back yet. Ditto re storms.
so far NBN / Optus seem to work well together and if I do get a modem soon I will be happy.

    regards PhilipA
Update 2. Optus just rang to say a tech will call with a new modem tomorrow afternoon.
    how is that!
