    Cool VHF or UHF

I got a licenced VHF unit from overseas, but it seems that most places only sell UHF. What the deal with that? What are most drivers using?

Plain old vanilla UHF. Although VHF has greater range it is not as clear and you need to tune the antenna. I figure you mostly use it to speak to the people around you so range isn't that useful andyou want better clarity then.
Just wish all the w**nkers out there would improve there language when using it as young childeren are around. They would use that sort of language in a public place.

I agree. The language has become an issue. There's not much you can do about it though. The only thing that had annoyed me recently is the availability of the UHF's on the market, and the fact being that kids are buying these handhelds and just being idiots on there by intimidating other users and trying to get an angry response out of them.

How many people communicate using VHF these days? Surely the UHF is the more popular alternative at the moment. I would have to think practically and weight up the options. A better signal range but less users or; more chance of getting in communications with someone using the common UHF if you needed help?

Sure, it's the way to go in Oz with UHF. I'm just trying to see if I can savalge a very good scanner VHF! I'm gonna see an expert at Greystanes on the w'end to see if he can give me something to make it dual band!
But based on what you guys are saying, it might be better to be a licensed VHF user than one of many unregulated UHF users. See what happens!

My comments were leaning towards a preference of UHF, not VHF. I don't know anyone of my friends or friends of friends who uses VHF anymore, so there's no point in me thinking about getting one, as it will be just me talking to myself in this area.

Yep, most four wheel drivers use the UHF CB these days. It has short range but, being FM, clearer ( think of the difference between AM and FM commercial radio ).

When you say "licenced VHF" what do you mean exactly ?

There are two available Citizens Band in Australia where you can operate without a licence - 27Mhz AM and 477Mhz FM

Yours may be in the "commercial" VHF band or it may even be a VHF marine band or amateur band radio. I'm sure you would know if that were the case though. These bands are between 150 - 170 MHz ( about).

AFAIK, VHF is mainly used for commercial communications. I am not aware of any 4WD networks for VHF. Fishermen also use VHF (and 27 meg), but I don't know details.

For us, UHF cb is great for short distance use.

I have a Codan HF for the VKS737 and Radtel 4WD networks for long distance communications.

I think LROCV has some licensed VHF channels they use on club trips. I think they mainly use UHF CB these days though.

I agree with the language thing. I went to VHF on my boat as I couldnt stand the language and crap kids were talking about on 27 meg. And this is on a emergency channel! Poor bastard that needed the channel if he needed it and really were in trouble and needed help from others. It happens and it happens lots on boats as strange as it may sound.

Being new to the 4wd world I dont know better but maybe the same applies as in VHF on boat. The "license thing" sorta stops the hooligans using that type of radio I suppose. If its a free open to all anybody can use it it gets abused and unpleasant for other people using it. People forget that these thing have long ranges with many people listening and blabbering utter crap with lots of people listening is not fun. Especially not on the emergency channel.

    Cheers
