Head Unit for Earlier L320 RRS

There are threads about putting in aftermarket head units in D3s etc but I cannot find anything for a RRS (early dash).

My car does not have the nav/command screen so I am looking a a replacement for the standard 6 stacker 6CD-565 head unit. Most of the discussion on D3 units revolve around use of the nav/command screen and most of the radios discussed seem to be cheap chinese units.

What I would like is a reasonable quality unit, with the biggest possible screen that is fully integrated into the dash where the current unit sits. I need rear camera input, bluetooth, modern turn by turn GPS system (I currently use Garmin) ability to use offroad maps like Hemma so I guess to ability to load software like Oziexplorer, decent soundand ideally compatibility with the standard amp under the drivers seat that I currently have (I believe this is optical) - if this is not possible I will rip it out and use an after market amp that is compatible with my HK speakers and sub woofer. The unit needs to be compatible with my current steering wheel controls. - volume, mode selections etc

I am sure I will think of more things but that is all that comes to mind at the moment.

So any suggestions on what to look at?

    Thanks

Does it use a fibre optic system ? Looking at an RRS dash i think you could easily fit a 9-10" screen there without obstructing any other controls , if you want to run apps then an android based system is your best bet, if you just want to run them off our phone then any carplay or android auto compatible stereo will do it.
My so called cheap chinese unit has been going good for over 3 years, i might swap it into my daughters car and get one with a bigger screen.

Yes it does have the fibre-optic link to the amp.

I am not wanting to break new ground in doing this rather see if anyone has done it before - by my calculations a 9"to 10" unit will be too big to fit in the double din slot.

    Cheers

It doesn't need to fit in the slot, standard double din which the screen sits forward slightly.

Sorry not quite understanding that. I don't suppose you have a pic by any chance.

    Cheers

Yes thanks - but I need to know what head unit others have fitted before I look at surrounds - looks as if no one on here has replaced the head unit in their early RRS.

I looked into changing the head unit a while ago but didn't get around to going ahead.
When you replace the head unit , the clock on the dash changes to "--:--" because the clock is in the head unit with signal to the dash via canbus.
There are instructions here https://incartec.blob.core.windows.n...ons/29-712.pdf that show how to dismantle the head unit and just keep the relevant component to keep the dash clock running. The incartec product is specifically for keeping the top navigation screen but even if you don't have the top screen the instructions for keeping the relevant part of the headunit still work. At least according to someones else's post that I can't seem to find now.
I think the first few year models didn't have clock on the dash, so that would mean ignore everything I just said :-)
