Aftermarket car stereo for 1996 Series 1 Discovery

As said the D1 is a single DIN slot. Most new stereos come with a cradle that the stereo itself slips into. Even if it is smaller it is fairly easy to pad or bolt the stero cradle in and then slide in the head unit. Worst case scenario is you may need to pad the gaps with some foam or cut out a fascia from some scrap plastic, but only if there are any gaps, which is unlikely/ Most head units also come with a surround that is clipped around the head unit to hide the cradle and gaps anyway.
I would buy Pioneer, Alpine, JVC or maybe one of these Eclipse units

Yes, and even easier is to buy an Aerpro ISO to (stereo make) adapter loom which makes fitting a new stereo a 5 min job- sold at Autobarn.

I am terribly confused, mainly because most installers I have called havent been able to give me a straight up answer!

I actually bought Waynep's old D1 and had to ditch the stereo and speakers. They just sounded crass and CD changer was missing anyhow.

I did a Pioneer Bluetooth headunit with focal speakers and powered sub under the seat.
Cost was just on @k but sounds great.
Huge improvement as you would expect I guess.
Point is that the installer did not even muck around with any plugs but just cut the wires and in with new unit.

I have all the old parts so should I ever sell her again, I might change it back.

Poor man pays twice. So I suggest you get a good one to start with, guess depend on budget and how much you love your music.

You won't need any filling strips with the D1. The UK fitted different radios to us so they might have needed one. There is nothing special about the Land Rover - it's just a single DIN hole.

The D2 is different as it's face follows the dash profile - a filling strip might make it look better but isn't really needed.

Thanks to everyone for their advice & input. Upshot of it all was that I purchased a standard single-DIN Sony Unit with bluetooth function, its fits perfectly in the 1996 Discovery Series 1, didnt even need any additional facia adapters etc, and I now have an awesome stereo in my car which doubles as a bluetooth hands-free phone car-kit. Well done JB-Hi Fi, you lost about $1K of business...
