I have two ZTE 165's (a work and a personal phone), and they are both CRAP.
Let me just say that again; CRAP, CRAP, CRAP!
They both have intermittent "special" issues (keep dropping calls, not dialing), the camera is woeful in low light conditions (my old CDMA Nokia was 100 times better), you can't get the phone to display time in 24Hr time, the speaker on the phone dies (I rely on the vibrate to tell me when the phone is ringing), Telstra have dedicated two keys which keep getting knocked to Foxtel and Bigpond (which you can not change), every time the signal gets low the backlight turns on (killing the battery), the screens crack with only a minor bump, you can only read the display if there is absolutely NO ambient light, they are missing many useful features present on other non ZTE phones, they do not work as a modem (as advertised), the firmware crashes (regularly), and is generally very poor.
Electronics are bad enough when just made in China, but this beast is also designed there!
Next time it WILL be a Nokia.
And hopefully a different carrier (if any of them ever get a decent rural network), or possibly a GSM/Satellite phone.
But on the plus side, the coverage is almost as good as the CDMA system.
I've looked at the F165i and while it's not pretty, and a little on the large side, I'd be prepared to go with it if it offfered the best reception enhanced by an external aerial.
i see telstra have a usb nextg modem with an aerial boster, in the past they would not allow any sort of boster on anything, so it may be worth asking if they will allow an aerial boster on the nextg phones
