Yes, it can be used quite happily, although people who still use 27mhz are few and far between, mostly truckies and clubs who want a "private" channel without every moron with a UHF putting thier 2c in

NO it cant talk to UHF, different frequencies are used

NO you MUST NOT use the 27mhz aerial with a UHF unless you want to kill the UHF's output stage....

I *may* be interested in buying it in the near future

AM/SSB units can be quite fun to have on board. It's always amazing to sit and listen to the long range conversations, often interstate..... sometimes international. Depends on the weather.

Thanks guys ..... what are the channels worth listening to / broadcasting to?

I usually just manually scan on the standard channels. When you hear chattering that sounds like a foreign language, switch to one of the sideband channels (one will make the chatter disappear, the other will make it understandable - unless it is a foreign language ) , and then use the clarifier to fine tune it in.

I used to have one mounted on my motorbike and i could sit on Mt Dandenong and talk to a guy on the US airfoarce base in Hawaii !

Yeah it does depend on the weather.... but not here... on the sun.

By 2013 you will be able to get on your 27mHz AM/SSB radio and speak to the world almost every day.. Although the predicted sun spot cycle maximum is only going to be between 70 and 90 it will still be a hoot... Can't wait.

I once was talking to a nice gentleman from the Taliban in Afganastan, but the signal kept dropping out, He told me he was trying higher ground to get a better signal. The reception became very clear, but then there was a BANG sound and the connection was lost. Never found out what happened
