    Loud uhf's

    Hi members.
everytime I travel to certain areas and sit behind interstate truckies, why is it that some of them sound like they are in the car with you and have a megaphone on your ear.almost god like boom,is there a way they can increase the power on the set they are using.
    cheers

I beleive many use the ICOM 400-PRO which has an option to transmit at 25watt.

Doesn't really help with the range, but screams over the top of everyone else.

Having extra transmitting power will not make a difference to the volume of the received signal, especially if you are travelling very close to the transmitting vehicle. (as opposed to the strength of the received signal) I have "tested" this many times. If the transmitted power is too much it may cause some distortion to the signal received if you are too close.
Perhaps the person transmitting is talking much louder into the mike, or has the mike closer to his mouth, also things like the quality of the set and antenna set up make a big difference.

There are two ways most truck drivers use their UHF's.

1..Holding the mic in there hand as it mounts to the dash.
If the truck is noisy inside they feel the need to talk loudly INTO and not across the hand peice.

2..The mic. is mounted to the overhead console and close to the driver(Same in my Disco).
This way you just reach for the button and talk, ussualy a bit quieter to hear(often with background noise).
Again the noisy cabin does play a role in voice level.
If the mic. is picked up mid sentance the volume increses as the hand peice is 200mm closer to their mouth.

Then again, maybe some of them are just exited someone want to talk to them
I'm glad I don't run the highway any more
Nearly had to put a rubbish bin under my UHF with all the that came out the speaker
    Cheers, Kyle
