I'm thinking that Security Essentials would not be intentionally inferior to those products you have to pay for.

Anyways I might have the MS "bloatware" operating elsewhere in the household, but when it counts I'm with ItsNotWorthComplaining. My MacBook Pro's OS hasn't let me down yet.

I'll also put a vote in for Kaspersky. I got to the same point and looked at several options but Kaspersky seemed best for our needs - light, fast and cheap.

As well as Kaspersky on the desktops, I have them all behind a dedicated firewall running Endian Firewall. It's free and will run on just about any old clunker of a box. It's easy to configure with lots of modules. It picks up a lot of spam and filters all the evil stuff that my kids might accidently find.

I'm still a fan of avast! - free edition

Integrates well with MS Outlook & Thunderbird.

I'm using a combination of the following

MS Security Essentials
Malwarebytes
Firefox running Ad-block(Make sure it's disabled for sites such as this one or subscribe) and NO-Script

Keeping your OS (Linux,Windows, Mac or whatever you use) updated is probably the most important of all.

At the end of the day however from the perspective of a Network Admin at a large ISP 99% of the people I block/hear of have done something silly like clicking on Ads on dodgy websites or replying to scam emails.

I'm no guroo and I'm going to wait for all the negative remarks but have been using the old stand by in Norton 360. I'm happy, came recomended by my repairer

At work we use the server/desktop (corporate) edition of Trend, honestly at BEST its VERY average, almost usless at stopping browser based attacks and hijacks. 3/10

Have used Microsoft Essentials for a while and it works well on W7 but has issues on maybe 2 in 10 XP machines where it wont auto-update, but it is free and can be manually updated. very easy to use 7/10

Kaspersky all round pretty good. 8/10

Avira, about the same as Kaspersky, very little in it. 8/10

Comodo, very configurable, comes with a firewall too. Not really aimed at new users. 9/10

Avast, used that at home for a couple of years, no issues but i'm pretty careful. Never even close to a virus in about 6 years.

Malwarebytes is pretty good too but that will miss stuff other Anti-virus software finds and finds stuff others miss. Its good but use it in conjunction with something else.

At work , (on my pc only) I run MS Essentials and Avira together with a scan now and again from malware bytes and Windows Firewall Control for a firewall, works for me.

IMO stay well away from norton, (sorry 33chinacars) its one of the few AV programs I would not even consider. I have had to repair way too many PCs directly because of norton stuffing something up.

On a side note to this, for the Mac users.
A few weeks back my daughter complainer her Mac Book pro had something wrong with it. it is less than 12 months old. I had a look at and with my limited knowledge decided either there was something wrong with the ram or something was using up all its memory. I asked what she had been doing with it with the usual reply of "nothing, just doing my homework".
I could not work it out but decided to buy some anti virus and ended up with Kaspesky which is only $30.00 odd dollars for a Mac.
I could not even get Kaspersky to finally install so it could do a scan so gave up and took the Mac to the shop where we got it from. The guy says something is using up all the processor power and it looks like Kaspersky and I should just delete it and MACS dont get viruses anyway, he has only seen two in 10 years of working with Macs.
I took the machine back home and finally worked out how to turn off things that were running in the background which gave enough free memory for Kaspersky to finish its install, there was no way I was going to delete it as the problem was there before I tried to install it. After the installation and update then doing a full scan there was two trojan programs deleted by Kaspersky and everything was back to normal. So if you have a Mac, don't think you are immune to attack from unwanted viruses or trojans.

Eset NOD32 with Malwarebytes is a very effective combo. :)

there are no virus for mac except for a proof of concept one but there are trojans as has been said many many times.

they are totally different creatures although people seem to lump them together these days.

the difference between mac and pc is that on a mac you have to install it knowingly or in many cases unwittingly.

whereas in windows land it can do it itself without your knowledge or input

and on a mac it stays with in that one login's userspace.

running out of ram affects both pc and mac but mac has more safe guards to stop corruption of existing processes but win7 is much closer than it's predecessors it seems.

it has to be noted that since mac is becoming much more popular the quality of available software has dropped proportionately and the day where there will be a real virus that can take hold on a mac is moving ever closer to fruition.

download the correct version of onyx to suit your setup from macupdate.com and a once a month cleanup will see you rarely have a problem on a mac.
