Admittedly I dont do big ftp's, but I just use the windows browser.
Filezilla and WS FTP are both free and easy to use. Mike
Cyberduck is also very good it is open source Mac based but they have a Windows version available.
winscp is good. simple to use, easier than fileziller

I carry a portable USB drive which gets backed up'd regularly, I use portable apps so that I can sit down at any Win machine, plug in an go, All programs I use nowadays run from the portable drive without having to be installed on the machine I might happen to be using.
So far its only my accounting programs which fail me for portable use, but it looks like I might have that liked shortly.
