Even though I work in IT with loads of PC's I much prefer working on Linux boxes. Recently I purchased myself a laptop (Lenovo) so I can work from home. First the mousepad doesn't work correctly, sent it back and was told it was normal. Booted it up a few weeks later and no boot so sent it back again, a few weeks later it breaks down with exactly the same problem. I also got really hacked off with Windoze 7 becuase everything is not where it used to be!
Purchased my wife an Imac a year ago (works from home as a Graphic designer). Plugged it in and it's been running fine ever since. No stuffing about with network configurations etc, just plug it in and it works!!
If it wasn't for the fact I have to have a Windoze laptop for work, I would definitely have a Mac.

Virtual Box is extremely good value for the money (free) if you need to run windows or any other X86 os. see VirtualBox

If you ever get the urge to play with open source apps OSX comes with the tools to allow you to do so. X11 should be preinstalled (or at least it's available on the installer disk as an optional package) and Developer Tools gives you a full optimised gcc setup plus XCode and a whole lot of other goodies.

Fink Fink - Home and Darwin Ports The Original DarwinPorts : Open Source on Mac OS X provide precompiled packages and a gui based management app to make the whole process pretty painless.

    cheers

No excuses Boot Camp allows you to dual boot in to Windows, so you can have the best of both worlds. Have a look at Boot Camp Assistant in Applications > Utilities

The Assistant allows you create a NTFS partion on your boot drive and creates a CD with all the drivers required to support Apple hardware.

what I love about mac is- " to remove an app" you don't like it's simply send it to the trash bin and that's it. None of those orphan files left behind
Windows has gooblty gooks and leaves bits everywhere, then there is the file system defrag. and it slows down,.
No .exe files for mac, the mac way seems quicker to install apps and doesn't expect you to reboot when they are finishing installing like windows program does. No blue screen of death and freezing like a windows pc when it has indigestion
I also have "VM" fusion that lets me run a couple of windows apps flawlessly only as there is nothing in mac yet to replace them

I must be weird, I just can't buy into the mac love

I used a mac for a short while and thought "great now I'm one of the cool kids" and yet it drove me batty.

After years of using PC's, I just couldn't get used to it.

    Intuitive ?

Not after being 'trained' by PC's but I can imagine they'd be great if you'd hardly used a computer before.

You are not alone. Having worked my way through Fortran, CP/M, DOS, Windows 3.11, XP and Windows 7, I have settled on Ubuntu.

All of my attempts to use Macs have been hard work and frustrating.
I can't see myself moving away from Ubuntu. Apart from the fact that it is free and works very efficiently on my free ten year old computer, since I have used it for a while now, the way it works seems intuitive to me.

Funnily enough that is the claim that Mac users claim for their OS on their expensive machines. I think "intuitive" is just another way of saying "what you are used to and what you expect".
