Oh, and a calling line ID thingy helps too. If it says 'overseas number' I don't answer, if it says 'private number' its Oz based and shouldn't be calling, making them fair game for violating the do not call register.

Of course, there are times when I'm feeling downright nasty and go on the attack straight away. I would have thought people working in these call centres would have thicker skins than some of them have ;-)

What are these unsolicited calls you speak of???

Ahh you guys must have landlines and/or be in the phonebook

We cancelled our landline and bought a skype phone number instead. I vaguely remember these sort of calls from many years ago

I got a call yesterday purporting to be from OPTUS.( Indian accent)
The guy read out my phone number DOH! seing he had just called that number.
He then read me my name DOH again! as it is in the phone book.

He then asked for my DOB which I refused as I said that he had it there.
He then asked what plan I was on with OPTUS. Again I refused.

The odds are he was from OPTUS as I had a similar call from TELSTRA last year, but if they call you it is unreasonable to then ask you for ID.

It could have been an info gathering exercise to steal my ID also.

I hope I never know and I am certainly not going to call OPTUS and wait for 30 minutes on the phone to find out it is an exercise to try to sell me a mobile contract..
    Regards Philip A

    Turn it back on them.
Say " Before we can proceed, I must confirm who I am speaking with, what is....." and then ask for the company they represent, their name, their employee number, their date of birth, the companies ABN, and keep on going until they hang up. Constantly stop them and ask they repeat or spell their answer. Do to them all the things they do to annoy you.

My wife had an SMS on her mobile phone this morning. Something like.."Congratulations your mobile number was drawn as the winner of $250,000 in the British Telstra Lottery. Please contact us on email address.......... to confirm your receipt of this message." It was immediately deleted.

This is a first for us on our mobile phones, but we get a few bogus calls on the house phone. We just hang up (although if Andy is here he usually gives them an ear full if he answers the phone...his language can be quite colourful at times).

Depending on my mode at the time I either quickly get them to hang up by turning it all around, or as entertainment see how long I can keep them on the line.

'Yes, my PC has been giving me grief, I ran you 3 times yesterday, why has it taken so long for you to ring me back, the mouse isn't working, what is a mouse, no my machine runs Linux, I have a Mac, I don't have a computer.........'

A couple of days ago I had one of the 'you have won' callers on the phone for more than 5 minutes with my wife and daughter cracking up while I strung them along.

It is my phone and I choose the nature of how it is used.

Had the same call as well. Every time they asked me to go do a selection on computer I went off to do the cooking. After 20 min said it was a long way from computer to phone. They were happy to wait. Then became unhappy when I refused to play any longer. They not called back since.

not interested at all in doing that---
    so I hung up.
I have no doubt that they actually were from the bank, but sometimes you just gotta rattle their cage,,
You've done it now! That was your only chance to get your hands on $10 mill bucks. You see, it appears there's an African cabinet minister who will pay A$10 mill to anyone who will assist him in getting 20 quazillion out of his country.

Apparently you only have to provide your banking details - including password - and bingo! The money is in your account! Honest, it's true!

    Can't wait for my email!
