    iPhone vs Android

    Open question:

Which do you prefer : Android phone or iPhone ?

I looked / fiddled with both at a shop yesterday and the iphone seemed more intuitive.

Interested in pros and cons of each.

I haven't owned an android phone (nor intend to) but the iPhones (like all Mac products) are based on user-friendliness. They work well but they are a very closed system. Certain things can't be done because apple feels that it would make it perform worse (Os modification and dodgy app development). If your technically minded and like to have more control over the phone android is an open-source platform which means that developers, and you, can do whatever they/you want with the phone and it's software. If your just looking for a consumer product then the iPhone is definitely the way to go but if you wanna really push the phone, android or jailbreaking an iPhone are both good. Personally the iPhone is the only phone that interests me anymore.

Had an iPhone 3GS, upgraded to an HTC Desire, went back to an iPhone 4 (spare one at the office), 2 weeks later I'm back on the HTC Desire and very happy...

The iPhones are certainly more intuitive and the Apple ecosystem is a comfort to many, but if you've any pc skills then the Android stuff is more rewarding... I've modified mine with a LeeDroid ROM and am currently waiting for a Gingerbread incarnation...

The controlling stuff with Apple is just starting to get on my tits... I subscribe to the Times newspaper for which there's an iPad app... There's also a Sunday Times iPad app which is included in my subscription, but Apple won't list it on the Australia iTunes store... :-(

with the android viruses about, the android market will eventually close like the apple market.

and like apple products there will still be the unlocked versions. if you like to live dangerously

The android visrus thing is old news ... and probably overhyped like most things.

I don't want to be spending hours and hours farting around with a phone.
I have no desire to write apps etc.

But I do want to have the option of turning off the ability for it to download data from the phone network without asking me - I don't want any nasty bill surprises.

I just want to "do stuff" on it, as a consumer product. Browsing news sites, forums and email mostly I would think. Playine a few games and using some ballistics apps.

I want wifi so I can do any high usage stuff at cofee shops or at home rather than using up any data allowance I might have in a plan.

Oh and naturally I don;t want to pay any ore $ than I have to. But first things first lets work out what phone i want.

Apple has had two issues. PDF related security flaw which was patched in less than a week and not actually used for malicious intent (jailbreaking via PDF was achieved). And one which only affected jailbroken phones. Both were not issues for the average consumers

I have an HTC Desire. Best phone I have ever owned. Im just a consumer. I want to do stuff, read email surf the net, and make phone calls.

The menu is "different", but I came from a Windows Mobile product. Took me a couple of days to get comfortable, now I love it.
