Do you have to buy subscriptions etc with the apple tv ?
Where's their "earn" if its that cheap ?
I just got an Apple TV box, pretty nifty addition to my home network at $128 and plugs into the TV. I have a windows computer running Air Video Server (free) and a bunch of non Apple avi video files on the hard drive. I installed the Air Video app on my iphone, it reads the video on the windows box over the home wifi network, converts it to Apple on the fly and beams it via wifi to the Apple TV box which shows it on TV. Absolutely flawless, no stuttering and great picture quality. They do some things very well indeed, a definate win.![]()

There is no subscription for it unless they tempt you into either buying or hiring movies, tv shows or songs from the itunes store. It also connects directly to the internet to watch things like you tube on your tv. Frankly I'm still exploring it myself but the initial impression is very good, especially if you happen to have a bit of a library of video files already at hand.
Natively, the Apple products only play Apple format files and won't play divx avi's. That's where Air Video server comes in. It's not made by Apple but is downloaded from the App store. The live conversion on the fly is brilliant. You can watch the video on iphone, ipad or tv.
