I think that you have to have location services turned on and that Apple or Telstra or someone collect information on the journeys of your phone (i.e. you). Are you comfortable with that ?
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

Exactly!
Your phone is always "tracked" that's how they work!!!
If you don't need to have it turned on to track why does it need to be installed at all?
HTC works without installing anything.
Different OS - different software. Just because the latest phones from the HTC line up are dead ringer copies of the iPhone doesn't mean they work the same!![]()
But to answer your question, one does needs to install the app, and for good reason, and by doing so, it provides much more than a search tool for that specific phone or iPad. It also provides functionality that your HTC doesn't offer, and herein lies the difference.
A user can open the app on any iPhone or iPad and track any other apple mobile device (iPhone / iPad) from the app on that phone/iPad if that 2nd missing device is linked to a mobile me account - say, your partner's gadget, or anyone else's. The iPhone itself is therefore able to provide an interface to locate and disable other lost devices, and remember - it does much more than just locate a device, it can lock it off remotely, amongst other things.
So, locking/messaging/playing alerts on someone else's lost phone or gadget remotely - your HTC - can it do that (with or without an additional app)?

Yes. I don't need an app installed anywhere. Just need the internet.
To locate someone else's mobile phone?
Here is a comparison between the 2 methods - the mobile me service is now free for the find my iphone feature though....

No to access my phone if lost. I can make it ring, lock it, access it, turn it on/off etc.
Although being able to screw with someone elses phone has it's merits.
Then the answer to my question above was No - not Yes!
It's more a case of the following scenario; you use an iPhone, naturally- you lose your phone, but you took the 25 seconds to download the "Find my iPhone" app. Although you can theoretically log onto a Mac or PC to find it, you don't have access to one, and time is of the essence. But your friend has an iPhone too, which is a likely scenario seeing they are market leaders 'cos they totally rock.
So you borrow, or get that iPhone's owner to download "Find my iPhone" - if they haven't already read this thread, and then go right ahead and locate/lock/message/etc your own iPhone right there and then. From their phone.
Worthwhile download I'd say. And again - a scenario and process not possible, as per your own admission, on your HTC unit.
PS - you can only "screw" with someone else's iPhone if you know their Apple ID and password.
