    NextG data access question

    Hi All,

I have had the misfortune to lose my smartphone (Motorola Defy), and I will have to replace it. Telstra say that I can replace it (at my expense) with something different if I want, so I am looking at purchasing an unlocked handset from the open market, rather than purchasing another Telstra one.

There is no problem with the phone access part of it, but I am a bit unsure as to how I could set up internet/data access etc. without the Telstra software being on the new phone. Has anyone done this successfully, or will I be forced to purchase a new handset from Telstra in order to get full access to my account.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,

    Lionel

You shouldnt have a problem at all.

I have just recently bought a new handset, that was unlocked, and is not tied to any carrier. I put my work sim in it, and all is good.

As you are with Telstra, there are a couple of other options as well.

The MMS & WAP settings can be downloaded from the Telstra web site. They are sent directly to your phone, and set it up automatically.

The other option is to make an appointment, and take your phone into a Telstra shop (NOT a dealer or re-seller) and they will set it up for you. I have done this at times when the settings just would not take on a new phone.

    Thanks for the info.

I looked at the Telstra web-site and found a page "Setting up a mobile phone for Telstra etc. etc." The screen asks for your mobile number and then it sends the settings to the phone. I presume this would be what I would need.

    Cheers,

At the risk of stating the obvious, make sure it's a NextG phone! Some phones have different model numbers to suit different frequencies but look the same.

Just make sure it is capable of UMTS/HSDPA on both 850Mhz and 2100Mhz, as telstra uses both frequencies depending on where you are. 3, vodaphone etc, use different frequencies (can't remember what though, but Telstra is the only one that uses 850Mhz)

Optus/Voda/3 are all on the 2100mhz network

If by chance you're having data dramas with this still, send me a PM. I work in the game myself.

    Cheers,
    -Adam.
