One would need a data allocation on the iPhone.
I tried to copy some files to the iPhone to read and/or watch but the iPhone only seems to let one download from iTunes, not from one's own computer.
I found this a couple of days ago. It's your standard book reader app, but you can use it to borrow books from your local library. You log into your library over the internet, browse, borrow, etc. When you borrow a book you download it for a fortnight or so. At the end of the fortnight the book is 'returned'. If you finish the book earlier you can return it earlier. I'm guessing that the library only buys limited electronic copies.
Search OverDrive or your local library website.
It seems to solve the problem of ebooks and libraries.

Brilliant! Thanks for the heads-up!![]()
I recently started using this with the local library service to my Android tablet.
Works great, the book choice is a bit limited but is growing.
I grab the files over wifi as well, not 3G.
