    Microsoft systems always badly fragment. The file allocation and extent block size can only be tweaked so far. Unix based systems can be better but when you don't write most things in contiguous blocks what else is going to happen.

    As for Apple ... can't understand why they don't have an App for that in the OS

    There was the application available in the older OS variants, but as of OSX 10.x.x.x. it became an automatic funtion of the OS that ran in the background along with tweaks to the FAT to try and prevent files becoming fragmented in the first place.

    it still fragments, an quite badly at times...

    i use prosoft's drive genius as it sorts it out pretty dam well imho and defragmenting can make quite a bit of difference to performance esp on the boot drive.
