    Macbook pro 13 i5 or i7?

    I'm planning on buying a MacBook pro 13. I like the portability of the MBP13. A MacBook air is not an option because of price. I plan to keep this computer for at least 3 yrs.

    My use is usual web, email, word and excel docs. I like the look of iMovie so will probably to some video editing/movie making.

    4 gig of RAM would be sufficient for me ATM but like the option if being able to upgrade RAM later. The i7 comes with 8 gig RAM. When SSDs become cheaper I will probably fit one.

    The i7 clock speed is about 10% faster than i5. The i5 is about as fast as the top spec 2011 MBP 13.

    The i7 is about $300 more than the i5.

    So which one should I buy to use for next 3 to 4 years?

    I was on the same dilemma and settle for a Sony I7 14"
    The 13"Sony is a very nice LT but the screen a bit small for my use.
    There are specials now in the Sony shops, go and have a look.The I5 are bellow $1000.00

    It is a dilemma. I currently have a 10" MSI n450 which after 18 mths has sloooowed down and needs a clean install. It was good value in some ways but not others. I like its portability.

    I want something more long term and am also attracted by the iPhone inter connectivity. This will be my first Mac.

    Well I settled on i5 MacBook.

    With the deal i got it ended up being $350 cheaper.

    The computer blokes from work convinced me the i5 was the go as:
    • it would easily do everything I wanted for the next few years;
    • with developments in technology, laptops and tablets would merge and I would probably want to upgrade in 3 years;
    • I could use that money for an iPad 2 or 3.

    So we now have an i5 ivy bridge MacBook 13 and an iPad 3.

    The MacBook is beautifully made, has a great trackpad and back lit keyboard, and such a smooth operation. Very happy. The iPad is very handy but I'm more impressed with the MacBook.

    Well after a few days of using the MacBook am very happy with it. I like the size, speed and screen. However when using iPhoto it slows a bit. Ive read MN uses a lot of memory do will upgrade to 8GB RAM this week.

    Apple are pretty tricky with their pricing between i5 & i7 models. After a RAM upgrade to the i5 the cost difference is a bit over $250.

    Why would you bother ? when you can get non proprietary more powerful hardware with a wider selection of software to do a better job at less cost ? Small, white, square .........make excellent wheel chocks.
