    waste of time, the old USB Hub wouldn't be fast enough.

    It comes down to one major thing - the quality of the quality of the flash memory. USB sticks use cheap flash memory which required much slower reading and writing in order to avoid errors. This doesn't matter much through a USB interface, as USB creates a bottleneck that exceeds that of the read/write speed of the flash memory. Try running your operating system off one though, and you'll see the difference straight away. SSD's also have far more complex controller chips, and have built in RAM cache, which adds to the cost.
