Hi All. If any of you are like me and work in fringe areas you were probably looking for a smart phone with an external antenna port.
I am hopless with IT and other black magic but from a quick look the new Telstra Touch 4g with external antenna jack looks pretty good.
Might not have all the the stuff of some of the others but will work where they wont.
Anyway, that's about all I can tell you, worth a look I think.

only problem is the Telstra rhetoric is a bit of a con job, 4g only works in major population centers, dark blue on the map Mobile Broadband Coverage - Telstra
its advertised as Blue Tick but in rural / fringe areas the phone drops back to next g = 3g then gsm (no data) on the fringes
I have the previous NextG blue tick Telstra Active touch (with antenna port) & it only has one bar in my house where my new (non blue tick) Motorola Defy+ has 4 bars, and it also has the External Antenna port & FME patch lead
the galaxy s2 has an internal antenna that can be used
use this to access it

You will find a lot of smart phones have a test port that can be used for an external antenna. However some are very fragile looking.
I'd like a robust antenna port on mine but nothing would get me to pay good money for a Telstra branded phone. They are just cheap and nasty.
I have never had much success with cheap aftermarket passive patch leads/cradles but the Burey passive cradle in my work car is great. It is a multi phone adjustable model.
I have a mighty smart Telstra tough
Yes i know i have to move up to something smarter, that's why i am watching the thread.
I use it with an external antenna mounted on the roof rails of the D4,and the reception is way better than my wifes HTC smart phone with no external antenna. At times the HTC will have no reception, but mine will have 3 bars.
You can use a cradle for many smart phones for use with an external antenna, but you lose some reception,so not as good as an antenna plug.
These guys are very helpful www.telcoantennas.They deal with this kind of stuff all day.
