It seems that drives are almost plug and play and that the computer sorts them out. Other that the ata drive which works, I upgraded to a 1tb sata and this worked fine until it developed so many bad sectors that it wouldn't run. I purchased the new sata but it wont run at all. Computer cant find it

Have a look through the menus in there, without knowing the BIOS you have I can't really be any more specific. If you have the manual for that motherboard it will be pretty helpful to you. In there somewhere you will find a list of HDD's installed. They are usually listed with the model number on them, that should help you determine if your new one is being recognised by the motherboard itself.
If it's in there, we can do some more things to troubleshoot your issue. If it isn't in there, then something isn't quite right with your motherboard and I can't really help all that much, sorry.

Just to add to this incase it's needed... Try a different sata port & cable... Might have a faulty cable or not be plugged in correctly... Does the drive spin up at all? Listen to it & see if it's actually spinning.... What about jumpers? Be careful using more than one drive & having incorrect jumper settings, that might be an issue....
Quite a bit could be at fault there... So do be sure to check those things as you said it's not showing in the bios.
