You may have to change the disc boot order in the bios so it tries booting from the optical drive first rather than from the fixed drive first.

I've had similar dramas with trying to restore Win 8.

If I had nothing better to do with my time I'd do the reversion back to Win 7 but I have made a decision to buy an iMac and a Macbook Pro later in the year (following updates) so it's not worth the effort involved.

I'm glad you have it "sorted".

This is all a bit off topic, but I have had no real problems with Linux during the ten years or so that I have been using it. Comparing the Linux experience today with the way it was 15 years ago is a bit like comparing a D4 to a Series LR.

I even tried to fire up a windows 7 full install disc I have but even that didn't work. I should have stayed in bed today

i dont believe linux is suitable as a desktop replacement.
servers are a different story.

my comment regarding win 7 was serious.
ive tried using 8 and it had some features i liked, but too many negatives overall.

Yes, because your computer is booting from the HD. Not from the optical drive.
