Inc's OSX System Clean Hints
(the fine print - i do this among other things for a living - this is a cut down version of what i use to clean up OSX based computers - i offer the advice on the condition that you own all the bits if it breaks! not that i have ever had an issue with it! make sure you check the latest version as things can change quickly in this industry.)
best utility i have come across for cleaning up OSX is ONYX
you can download it from Macupdate
You MUST download the version that suits your flavor of OSX
(if you don't know what version you run, look here to find out.)
they are listed under Related Links below the latest version info
after you download open the disc image if it doesnt open by itself and run the installer
i usually install it into utilities
you then run it.
most can just click on run automated cleanup and your on your way
reboot after you have run Onyx
that didn't hurt much did it
you can also get CCleaner from the app store and use it to do quick clean ups in between runs of Onyx.
ClamXav is a pretty decent on demand virus scanner for OSX so you can keep nasties out of your documents and not pass them on to your windows based associates
i suggest you use the one from the app store, not the one from the download page as OSX doesn't need the real time scanning ability in the real world.
hope it helps
