Thread: New Gremlin

Hello All,

Well my Windows 7 Home Premium Asus Laptop has developed a new gremlin. When I use the "Start", "Computer" function instead of opening different files true to the software program it was saved in my computer now wants to open everything as "Word" documents.

I have tried "Start" ... "Computer" to open files that are obviously Excel spreadsheet files. I made them in Excel after all. Up pops a "Word" page and it tries to open the Excel file as a "Word" document. Then up comes an error message

I cannot see any "Default all files as Word document" choices anywhere on the "Computer" screen-page. What is going on???

How can I get rid of the Word document obsession so I can return "Start" ... "Computer" to its generic function of opening any software it is capable of?

Is this happening only for Excel files, a limited number of file types, or all file types?

If it is only happening with Excel (or a limited number of file types) you can reset the default program for each file type by right (single) clicking the file, clicking Open with from the context menu and selecting the program.

The next issue is what happened to cause this? Have you recently installed new software? (thinking it might have changed the default programs used for certain file extensions).
