Sorry just to clarify - you laptop can download updates from the network but you can't connect to the net?
If you laptop is getting updates it must be connected. Try going to run->cmd and type ping Google.com See if it successfully receives packets. If so it may be your browser may be trying to connect via a proxy and this can be disabled in the browsers settings (would only be the case if you haven't done a clean install and the previous person had these settings.) alternatively try to download an different browser

Hi Synthium. Computer connects fine via LAN cable but not wi-fi. And yes, it is automatically downloading updates via wi-fi including XP service pack 3 plus another 48 updates last night. I just cannot get browsers to connect. I deleted firefox and installed a new version, all to no avail. I get the message that there is no wi-fi connection although there obviously is. I don't like being beaten by computers but.... Jim

Sorry I am actually on holiday so not on the net much. You can try this

    Click "Start"
    Click "Run"
    Type "services.msc" in the field
Find DHCP Client in the window that opens after you enter services.msc on in Run.
    Restart the dhcp client.

    Might work.

    Or you can try

    1. start then go to control panel.
    2. click internet options, then connections
    3. Click LAN settings then it will open automatic configurations.
    4. Remove all the check marks you see on automatic configurations and proxy server
    5. Press OK

    Or

    1. right click the connection either it is lan or wireless...
    2. choose properties
    3. then click one the internet protocol (TCP/IP)
    4. click properties
    5. check obtained both

    Or

    Solution > Firefox
Go to tools > options> advanced > network. Click on setting and check no proxy

    IE7

Tools> Internet options > Connections > Lan setting > Check proxy server.

Try those 1 by 1 and see what works!

I tried all these to no avail. The message I am getting is ...cannot find server at ( whatever search engine I try). Does this give you any clues? Jim

Try going to run and type cmd
Then in the console type ipconfig /renew

Also it could be a firewall or Internet security/antivirus program thing. Try disabling them for now to see if that helps

    Or

2 [right click] then click on [Property]
3 click on [configuration] choose [Driver] tab
    4 then [uninstall]
5 [turn off] or [Log off]
6 [Log on] or [Turn on]
7 your computer should auto-detect and install your wireless hardware
if not it will ask for driver
8 if so just follow the add new hardware procedure

After that I am not sure. It could be a setting in your router regarding the DNS or even the type of encryption on your router - you could try changing between wpa and wep

I have a wi-fi dongle for travelling. I set that up and it works fine, just not on my wi-fi modem. This is relatively new and is Netgear 11. Works fine around the house, just not on this laptop. Jim

I would love to do a clean install but it doesn't seem to have a copy on hard drive.I have a W7 disc. Maybe I should just install this. There is no data to worry about. On second thoughts the system is working now. Don't ask me how. It wasn't last night. COMPUTERS!!! Jim
