    which psu to use where?

    i have two machines and two psu.
    what psu would go better with which machine?


    psu1: thermaltake smart 650w
    +3.3V: 24A
    +5V: 24A
    +12V: 52A

    psu2: antec basiq 550w

    +3.3V: 28A
    +5V: 26A
    +12V1: 22A
    +12V2: 22A
    +12V3: 25A


    the antec was twice as expensive as the thermaltake, is it a better brand?
    the thermaltake has the 12v on 1 rail, where the antec has 12v on 3 rails.

    between 5 and 8 hdd's

    At the risk of being shot down by the Pro's-

    your biggest power expense is video,,
    At the most your CPU will drag 130Ws,, and those ones are a few years old now,,
    New high end vid cards draw near a max of 300w,, older ones draw more----

    lots of Amps on a single rail Vs less on 2-3 rails???
    depends who you talk/read/listen to.

    Go back to the reference page for each vid card and that will tell you,, the 980 is new?/1gen old? 300 is heaps,,

    This in no way means either is big enough!

    This machine, that is at least 4 years old now, has a 1500W PSU,,
    There was a certain amount of future proofing going on then,, Hey Inc!

    rumour has it.....

    power supplies @ 3 yrs of age are 30% less effective

    motherboards and cpu's etc use 20+% more power @ 3 yrs of age

    and some of the power usage specs on some of the stuff is a tad underestimated when you push it hard, to start with

    low voltage creates heat...

    heat = early death
