    Wi Fi help

    Hi People.
There was a stuff up when we got our NBN installed,I asked Deb to tell the installer the unit had to go close to the home entertainment system.Well it did get fitted close,at least its in the same house
Since the instal I havent had internet to the TV/blu-ray or set top box recorder as they are all wired, not wi-fi.
I endeavored to get the wi-fi dongle for the Sony Bravia TV,no longer available,a few on EBay for $175
In the end I bought a TP-Link 300Mbs wireless nano router for the TV.Im told if I run it in "client" mode(back to front???) I can plug the TV's LAN into it and it will restore internet ability.
It arrived yesterday, yet to plug it in.
A question. My old Belkin router has the TV/Set top box recorder/Blu ray plugged in,(foxtel is wireless). Can I use this Nano router in "client mode" plugged into the old Belkin router so the Blu ray and Set top box recorder get internet at the same time as the TV???? It would save alot of messing round changing cables. It should only be a matter of plugging the ethernet cable from the Belkin into the TP-Link ethernet, correct????
Im a Trodgolite in these matters.
    Thanks
    Andrew

    you're about on the money....

if you run your router devices in client mode they will take a wifi signal and turn it into an ethernet cat-5 style network. not all routers have this ability and only provide a single ethernet in which then gets shared across the rest of the ethernet ports and the wifi network they create.

Some of the belkin and netgear range extenders also offer this feature, you can use one to make a wifi hotspot to tie into an ethernet network or you can use it to make an ethernet connection to a wifi network.

Agree with Dave you're heading in the right direction.

I had the same problem here many eons ago. Back then though it was called a wireless bridge and required flashing a linksys router with custom firmware to 'reverse' it. Still works well today, Even though it is an old 802g router. I have TV, bluray and theatre PC plugged and it hooks up to the wireless router upstairs.

    Cheers

    Hi Andy,
    What is your NBN connection?
I don't have NBN but just ADSL2 and I have a TPLink TD-8817 ADSL2+ Router. It is connected in bridge mode to a Netgear Nighthawk AC1900 Router.
Since I did that a lot of my internet connection problems went away. The Nighthawk has 4 RJ45 ports that you can connect devices into. It also has very good wireless connection and serves the whole house quite well.
If we ever get NBN (we are only 5.5 km from the CBD) I will be keeping the Nighthawk or something similar and connecting whatever device from NBN to it.
If you can do it stay with the wired connection. It is far more reliable than wireless.
Good luck with it. It is a minefield.
    Cheers,
    Russ

Well it works, what a major head ache.(could have said alot worse!!!!).
Biggest issue is trying to talk to the wireless router. It times out quicker than a slow website does.In the end I had it connected direct to the Telstra gateway to program it to client mode.Connected it all up,no internet still.I had put the wrong password in the router so the gateway wouldnt open Finally tricked it into opening, had to turn off the antivirus and re-set the router before they would talk.

Russ.We have NBN wireless, seems quite alot quicker than the ADSL2 we had, wich was fast for country standards(we are close to the post office where all the Telstra gear is).
The Telstra gateway seems fine, has plenty of wired ports spare, its just no where near the home entertainment system.
