    NBN WiFi Range?

We are shortly to get Fixed Wireless NBN with the big T.
I am trying to work a bit of stuff before we get it.
We are getting some sort of Telstra Gateway which I'm guessing is a WiFi modem?
Does anybody know what sort of range we may get out of the Wi-Fi?
Because our place is built around a court yard & all the walls are metal I'm thinking we may have trouble getting range from the living quarters across to the kids bedrooms, about 15m away through 3 or 4 metal walls?

I was thinking if we do not get enough range I might be able to use some sort of range extender? Does anybody know anything about the range extenders that plug into the power? Do they have to be on the same circuit? What else might work?
Any help would be appreciated because as far as the kids are concerned once we have NBN (The Big Internet Tower as the kids call it) they think they will have endless movies & music. So I would rather have things sorted as quickly as possible.

    Hi Jones,

    My limited understanding is -

    * Range extenders that plug into electricity - MUST be on the same circuit. (I was told this recently by a cabling guy)

    * Wi-Fi works best on "line of sight"

    * I agree with you - walls could cause a concern

    * In my experience you can't beat physical cabling... It's an ugly solution - but could you simply run a 20/30 mtr Cat 6 Ethernet cable?

And be careful with the kids - there is a habit of "let's download as much as we can", when in reality you don't really need that much. I'm just as guilty of it as the next guy!

    Cheers,
    GG.

    Thanks GG.
I may still need a WiFi range extender because all the kids have tablets, WiFi only?
The cable might work for their game consoles but as you say, "UGLY"!
SWMBO might have something to say about cables.

The Telstra wireless will not be wifi. It will deliver to a modem/ router that will have Ethernet ports.
Then you plug in your wifi,
Buy a reasonable 802.11n wifi, you don't need gaming speed

    Edit
The metal walls will kill it, maybe one cable to a second wifi
By all means get a Defender. If you get a good one, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.

Some providers offer a optional wireless router on the application form although you can usually buy one cheaper yourself.

Our WIFI gets through aluminium cladding without any problems so you might want to wait until you see how good/bad the signal is before considering extenders.

My Telstra Fixed Wireless NBN came with NBN's box on the wall which goes to a Telstra WiFi modem. This was all as supplied with no special order. The Modem also has wired ports.

Do you know where the NBN tower is?

NBN does not use mobile phone towers and so the tower they are using may mean their signal will not reach you.

Hopefully it will but a friend here was told by NBN and Telstra he could get their fabulous fixed wireless NBN only to be told by the installing tech that there was snowflakes chance in Hades of it working due to his location and the location of the nearest tower (which barely rises above the trees!). Hence he received a full refund of the installation costs...

The NBN tower is about 1/2 a km as the crow flies assuming the crow isn't drunk.
NBN actually looked at putting it on our land but decided the hill behind us was a better spot & I wasn't that keen on having it on my land, the rent was good though.
If we have a problem with the towers range I would be surprised, the waves or whatever they are might go over our heads though. We will probably get brain tumours!

When I ordered the NBN they told me the "Gateway" was WiFi so I'm hoping it is. I will be a little annoyed if it's not.
I have started looking at range extenders on the net but might wait & see before I buy one. Only 1 hour from home to Atherton to buy a range extender if I need one.

So that is where you live
A couple off farms away have it, but they were told it was getting marginal, they are surrounded by a lot of trees though, we are higher and more open. As the crow flies probably only half a km more to the tower too so max 3-4km to the tower is that likely to be close enough?

My house is 6.5 km direct line from our local tower and the signal strength is really good. However there was no signal at ground level due to a nearby hill in the way so the installer wanted to walk away. From my roof-top the line of sight clears the edge of the hill by about 1 metre although I could raise my antenna if needed. It will be interesting later this year as I've sown canola in that paddock which can be well over 2 metres tall in a good year, although not likely near the top of a hill.
