Ideas?

where to start,,

sisters two year old DELL, XPS 8700,
she tells me its flickered since new,,
that term is not correct, but what do you call it when only the bottom half of the screen flashes off(very quickly!!) its not tearing or artifacts so?? flickers?
anyway, I had a poke and the installed vid card was de-installed,, and when reinstalled made no difference.
chuck a new card in I said,, $90 later and yep she can now run it 1080P,, whoopee,, except it still flashes,,
As the PC was due for replacement anyway (she uses it for her work) she asked about replacing bits rather than just buying a new one, so, one MSI B85M-E45 motherboard, twoX4Gb of ram(total now 16

), and a samsung EVO 256gb SSD later and I get the job of putting it all together,, removed ram, HDD and cpu cooler, then old MB, and cleaned up thermal paste. Then found the MSI cooler uses a different backing plate and use torx screws-- all soon swapped over. Everthing put back together and the start button pressed,, and the fans spin and stop, spin and stop, spin and stop,, etc etc etc. everything pulled out bar one stick of ram,, spin and stop. no speaker (thanks DELL). Hmmm. Pulled the PSU and replaced it with a Antec True power,, not even a fan spin here!! I couldnt really get too mad,, The antec was probably ten years old! and lived with a mouse or two for the last year LOL!! Anyway pulled another spare out of my hat and this time Bingo! posts and boots into windows.

and flickers.
so let me make a short list,,
new MB, new-ish psu, different monitor,
same old HDD.
I've tried the rebuilt dell on both my U2400's and they both flicker.

You want more?
while I was rebuilding, I loaned my Sis a spare PC and just bolted her old HDD into it.

No flicker.

I had pinned my hopes on a old program conflict with W10(she has a ****load of programs running) until she told me this,,

have you measured voltages?

with a multimeter not what the board says...

boot the thing with a hirens disc and see if you have the flicker

Yep,, I have a hirens.
Its somewhere downstairs in one of 15 fully taped up packing boxes,,
every time I open one its like christmas!

Simple Pedro

, the only thing you haven't changed is the CPU. Do you have another motherboard compatible CPU you can try ?

Presumably you're using the on board video on the new MB ? Is the video crook when using both digital and analog outputs ? Have you tried changing the refresh rate, does this make a difference ? Have you tried different video cables (grasping at straws here) and finally have you tried a different power cable (faulty earth ?)

My punt though is a crook CPU

Is it the LED backlight for the screen playing up???
This one goes black,you can see whats there JUST.It flickers before going black.I shut the lid open it several times until it stays on.Once warmed up its fine.

how things change in ten years,,

this old psu hasnt got the right cableing to run a sata hdd and a sata cd rom , so no MB drivers loaded yet,
and no I dont have a spare Haswell lying around Deano

So I just play russian roulette with her programs?

I have a clone of her HDD here to play with so no data loss possible

I'd hate to go buy a new 1150 socket haswell only to find its one of her strange legal programs thats conflicting with something.. they were all loaded/purchased for her original Win 7 OS.

I have plenty of time anyway, the i7 I built from (literally) dumped parts seems to be working fine for her,,

no onboard vid, or intel cpu graphics allowed with this board Deano,,
though there is an option in the Bios under Intergrated graphics though,, a choice of IGD or PEG.
any thoughts on what these mean?
