    No, they say they've got nothing that would prevent it - it's as much of a mystery to them as to me, but due to recent cutbacks, I can't exactly say our IT department is that switched on - they couldn't even get the Internet working off my wifi and I manage that on my own just by by turning off the proxy server in IE...

    Ask them for a replacement laptop. They need to provide you with a useable device.
    If you can connect to the Wi-Fi and internet OK then maybe it's something in the settings for Outlook? Can you reset the Outlook or reinstall it?
    My work Outlook email works no problem on both my work laptop and personal phone, which doesn't help you of course, but that's how it should be.
